Default Quad Engines

I have a project I'm planning on doing and I'm looking at using an engine from a quad. I would like to get some opinions on what are some of the better quad engines out there. What I'm looking for is and engine with good reliability, part availability, aftermarket support, and overall performance.

Thanks in advance for all who reply.

depends what you want your "project" to do?

do you have room for a cooling system?

What kind of project? With that said, it's hard to beat a Fourtrax 250R engine.
But we need more info on your project!!

Any honda air cooled motors - 300 or 400 cc have been around long (if you want air cooled).

Are you looking for something with a transmission attached? Many of the belt automatic utility quads have an engine that is completely separate from the transmission. That might simplify things (or not).

The project is an off road bike. It's bigger than a mini bike but a little different than a dirt bike.

I do have room for liquid cooled but I would also consider air cooled. I would like an engine with a transmission attached. That's good to know about the belt drive automatics though.

I wouldn't mind having a hayabusa motor, but I don't want to spend too much on it. That would be awsome if I could pick one up for cheep somewhere.

Any suggestions on where to look for a decent used engine?

some yamaha quads have oil coolers but not liquid engine coolant and you can get them 4x4 or do you need a chain drive instead of shaft.
