3G Iphone

I'm thinking about getting the 16GIG 3G. Anyone have it? How do you like it?

Mark.

There are very few discussions about the 3G, at least from what I found.

Would you consider it a IPOD replacement? What apps are you running? Is it as fragile as it looks? Have you used the GPS in the car? Dose it update fast enough to be effective?

Any help would be appreciated...

Would you consider it a IPOD replacement? I never had an Ipod and I don't use the Ipod part of my phone anyways.
What apps are you running? Lots of games, DOn't really have much other then games
Is it as fragile as it looks? No I have dropped it a bunch of times, and it hasn't broke on me, the back is scratched up, but the screen is good.
Have you used the GPS in the car? GPS is OK, but doesn't replace having a real GPs unit
Dose it update fast enough to be effective? Not sure what you mean by that.

I'm trying to justify the purchase of the phone. I don't have an IPOD, or GPS. If the phone is all that it's cracked up to be, it sounds like it's a steal.

a friend has one.. its nice. he cracked it and has all apps now...

biggest prob is that if you picture messages with other people, don't plan on it much anymore.

to receive a picture message I'd have to send the picture to his email instead of his phone number, since I have a plan that is free to send pics from phone to phone and NOT phone to email I don't send him pictures. a long with many other people he talks to.

other than that is pretty sweet.

I already have the Samsung blackjack. I have a feeling thats it's not worth it to upgrade...

There is a voice in my head that keeps saying "get it, get it, get it"

Any help would be appreciated...

1. The GPS very will in car works . Easy to manipulate with one hand while driving with the other. You can also click on "show traffic" in goggle. In Chicago area, that has been very helpful. It updates fine in Chicago area, a little slower in the country. But, then again, there is less traffice to worry about.

2. It's nice to use Safari to surf the net any time any where.

3. The apps functions all seem to work well. You can find just about anything you need or work for a buck or two.

4. It works as good as an iPod, but see my note below.

5. I like being able to check the weather or stock market anytime.

6. The contact list is easy to operate. It is very easy to add name and addresses. Then, when you need to go see someone, you pull up the GPS map and tell it to map to there house. It works very well.

Now, some negatives.

1. This phone is bulky and sits in a your pocket like a package of American cheese. It's heavy too. So , forget tossing your phone into the pocket of your favorite, baggy shorts. They're gonna be around your ankles in no time (OT: for some, that many be a good thing, ).

2. You will end up getting some kind of case since you become paranoid about scratching your screen. That screen is the delicate part.

3. Although it is an iPod replacement, I will not bring it to the gym b/c I do not want to lose it. So, you're still going to need that iPod.

Overall, I am glad I have it since the GPS map function and Safari outweight the negaitves.

I had the Blackjack previously as well. Before that I had the Cingular 8125. I purchased the HTC Fuze for about 2 weeks, and returned it for the 16GB 3G iPhone. Basically, 3 years of dealing with the quirks of Windows Mobile finally came to a head when the Fuze (HTC Touch Pro) was actually WORSE than previous generations. The improvements they tried to make just made it worse.

Since I have pretty specific requirements out of a phone, the only other phone that really does what I want was the iPhone.

Pros
--------
- does push email as good as a blackberry or winmo directpush
- screen doesn't scratch easily
- Safari is the best mobile browser around (Opera being second)
- GPS works WAY easier than a winmo phone
- phone portion is dead simple and just works. My favorite feature is how it turns the screen off while at your ear, and turns it back on when you remove it. Way better than having to turn the screen back on through whatever unlock sequence you have with winmo.
- only AT&T phone that does Pandora for free. They try to charge you on other phones.

Cons
----
- back scratches easily (get a case, perhaps)
- no multi-tasking/app backgrounding, which makes listening to Pandora, or using IM apps irritating. You can fix this with a jailbreak, and an application (not sure its name though)
- GPS isn't quite as good as a car's, but is good enough to get by
- screen resolution is a little low for its size, compared to some of the newer winmo devices, which do full VGA
- can't change email alert (I've heard there are hacks, but haven't tried yet)
- battery life is crap if you use it as anything more than just a phone.

All in all, I'm more satisfied with it that my HTC Fuze. Do I wish it were better? absolutely.

p.s. I also disagree with the bulky statement. It's no heavier than comparable phones. Plus a phone with a tiny bit of weight to it seems to make me less prone to dropping it.

There are a couple MMS apps you can use if you jailbreak, I was investigating this the other day.

What data plan do you have? If you have an unlimited plan, emailing is as free as MMS is...

An advantage to being in the tech field, most of my friends already have email on their phones. I don't send MMSes often in the first place.

I also had the black jack and htc tilt before the Iphone, and I was sick of the glitchyness of windows mobile.
My biggest complaint is safari gets glitchty when loading pages with alot of pictures, or a lot of data.

I'm sure you probably already know this, but the iphone carries a mandatory additional $30/month "data" plan
