Steering Issue....

I have a 94 explorer with a 3" body lift....I did the lift over a year ago
I installed the shaft extender on the steering shaft...
when i drive it now...it turns perfectally but when i go to bring the wheel back straight it is hard to bring it back and it wants to keep pulling the direction i turned....alignment is good and the steering shaft U-joint is also good, checked by holding below and above and turning shafts opposite...no play....could it be the steering box going bad or possibly ball joints??? the shaft has play. maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch movement circular each way...
Im kind of lost now and Im kind of weary of driving in wintery conditions as is...
Thanks alot for any help...

raise the front wheels off the ground

disconnect tie rods at the spindles

manual turn spindle left to right and see if you have any stiffness in the motion.....

also check the front axle joints for stiffness as they can do the same effect on steering.

Something to do with a return line in your power steering system maybe? Relief valve in power steering pump?

Does it make a difference when you go faster?

X2 On Wheel Joints, I had that happen on My Bronco not that long ago and that was the problem.

$600 for U-joints and ball joints? Seems like a good deal, Ball joints are $25 a piece, and u-joints are $20 a piece. If that includes alignment that seems cheap in todays shops.

If you havent had the work done yet then call your local auto parts store(nape, auto value, or independent, not murrays or zone) and the should be able to change the joints for you if you take the shaft in to them. Same thing with ball joints, take the whole spindle in and they can change it too. I work at an auto value and we would probably charge you ~$60 for 4 ball joints and 2 U-joints.

Yes, as long as you don't engage 4x4 you won't hurt anything.
