Default So I found this deer today...

...its laying dead in my neighbors yard. looks to me like it got shot and never found. due to its unknown age would it be good to butcher? I am thinking its coyote fodder.

Was it frozen? Id think a dead animal would freeze in 15-20 degree weather within a couple days after death. So if it wasnt, Id say its fresh.

Though, IDK if Id still trust it.

It is illegal to take posession any wild game you did not legally take on your own.

A butcher will not touch it unless it is tagged.

It is also illegal to tag a deer that you did not legally take.

So unless you shot it I would just let it lay where it is.

Also you do not know how long it was there for. So it is undetermined if the meat is good or not.

I would not touch it. The risk of becoming ill is to high. Bacteria multiply rapidly between 40-140 degrees approx. It is better to only deal with venison that you know the exact history on. (when or how it was killed, ect)

Just my two cents:)

Apparently it isnt.

A friend of mine shot a ten point on his uncles land but it didnt drop. It ran 200 yards into the neighbors field.

He went to talk to the neighbor to ask if he could retrieve it, the guy didnt give him permission, and went out with his truck and tagged it as his own. He didnt mention it was a buck or anything to the guy.

His uncle told him that it was illegal for him to do that, just like you said. So he called the DNR and asked, they told him "If it was in his property he can do what he pleases with it, whether you killed it or not."

Maybe the person he talked to was on lunch and just wanted to be left alone.

He only weighs like.. 120 pounds. He said the guy looked drunk and was probably three times his size.

His exact words were, "If he had a gorilla suit, he could pull off another Bigfoot hoax. He probably smells just as bad."

Car/Deer accidents is a totally different subject.

Yes it is illegal to take into possession any deer you did not shoot yourself.
