I appreciate that, but it seems the whole key to it is written in contract promises vs verbal promises. I've done some research since starting this thread, and it seems the army is the only branch that does allow you to choose your first duty post for up to your first year in, and can transfer you after the year if they choose to. Of course the recruiters don't want you to know that, they want to stick you somewhere they're told they need people the most.

Yeah I am not trying to be a dick or put the services down. I just have seen a lot of young guys make the mistake of believing the recruiters promises and get stuck in some thing they can not get out of. Good Luck

why not? i did, and i loved every minute of every gunfight, every IED, (that didnt take my buddies lives) every door i kicked in, and every enemy that got to see allah because of me. do it to it man. back on subject, when i went thru basic all the active duty ppl had a chance to say where they wanted to go, all the douches, that the drill sergeants didnt like, got sent to alaska, and all the ppl that were worth a damn got sent to cool places. if you do go thru infantry school, have fun down in Ft. Benning, and make sure you get a summer basic training. i hear the winters are cold down there. also when your recruiter feeds you a line of bullshit, make sure when you goto meps, that you see what was promised to you in writing or walk out. we had a lot of guys that were told they were getting airborne school and ranger and all this other shit, and it wasnt in their contract. dont hesitate to walk out!!!

My brother in law is in the marines.

He always said to me you are either one of two things in the force, being a bullet sponge or not being a bullet sponge.

He said if you were dumb enough to not tell them what you wanted and get it in writting that you were going to be a bullet sponge.

I dont know anything about other than what he said but it sounded resonable.

Better yet, tell them you want open contract, where they will match you up with a job that fits your pysch profile and your ASVAB test results. You will receive training in your special MOS and be glad you did it that way. No one knows you like Uncle Sam!

You will be glad you did it this way!

I do not believe there was much choice back then other than I signed a committment contract and filled out a wish list of places to be stationed.

Remember this was pre Humvee's and kevlar helmets... we wore tin pots and drove gamma goats. the Army has changed a lot over the years.

What ever you choose please be sure you get all the education you can from it , pick something that will translate into the civilian word, thank you for wanting to protect and defend the liberal dems ...and the rest of us Americans

Let me make something very clear: When it comes to the military, they will put you where they feel they need you, period! The needs of the military are always above the personal needs of the individual. You can get all the agreements in writing you want, the verbage of the contract will state that if the military needs you somewhere else, you're going. I'm not slamming the military, it's just how it is.

Look in to being a Crispy critter at least you will be able to use your trainning when you get out. Also look into the Air Force if your score is that high you could get a pretty good deal in the Air Force plus they have the best chow.

During basic you get to fill out your "Dream Sheet" or "Wish List." It's called that for a reason. They will put you where you are needed. If you can't handle being to far away from home, then you maybe you shouldn't join.

you will not get a duty station gaurenteed in your contract. they will ask you your 3 preferences. you may or may not get one of them. they will put you where they want/need your mos. side note: had one young lady who was assinged to Hawaii two weeks before the end of ait only to have her orders resinded and was sent to Alaska.

My Army buddies swear by Ft Bragg NC. All I gotta say is Myrtle beach. I say east coast is awesome, but I'm a Parris Island Marine and was stationed at Camp Lejeune back in the days.

My last job in the Marine Corps was at the School of Infantry working with the personnel monitors. I was the one who assigned the MOS to those lucky few with the open contracts. Now that was a fun job! I've never heard so much whining and complaining from adults.

FWIW, the job with the absolutel lowest requirements: cook! Sure, sometimes we would get folks who actually signed up to be a cook because they enjoy it and that is all fine and good but then we would get somebody come through MCT who would be too stupid to do anything else but make mashed potatoes and clean chow hall floors. I sometimes wondered how these mouth breathers even made it into the Corps in the first place.

On the other hand, if your overall ASVAB score is in the upper-90s and you can pass a security check and you go into the Corps open contract you'll generally end up with something pretty good.

Fort Bragg is a dump and the town of Fayetteville makes Jacksonville look like Grosse Pointe. The only good thing about Fayetteville is that it's closer to Raleigh and civilization (but further from the beach).

And as for Myrtle Beach... I spent many drunken weekends at Mother Fletcher's and the Freaky Tiki! Good times!
