Refresh rates on plasmas is not an issue at all because it is completely different technology. Plasmas are great at motion in pictures, do have deeper blacks and tend to have softer, more realistic pictures. On the other hand, LCD have brighter pictures and usually matte screens which don't reflect as much from the room and are better suited for areas with intense lighting or near highly reflective things such as windows. Some people prefer LCD's over plasma because they sometimes can give you a more "wow" factor picture in terms of sharpness, and brightness but others prefer plasmas for the softer color tones, softer picture, better contract (thus deeper blacks) and generally a little more realistic image quality. I have two Samsung LCD 1080p and I do love them and am always impressed by the picture with HD content, but I way prefer my 50 inch Panasonic Plasma 1080p for sports and movies. Also, I sometimes get eye strain watching the LCDs that I don't with the plamsa.

how about this one?
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ...6608#prodspecs

It appears for 42-37" TVs I shouldn't be too worried about 720 vs 1080?

Comb Filter Type: Digital, 3D Y/C
Speed: 8ms

Contrast Ratio: 1000:1

RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I highlighted why you should.

But seriously, if yout hink your 4 year old tv has a good picture, you will be happy with that walmart lcd.

Also the response time is slow. Try to get 4 or lower. i have 5 and on high speed i can see it blur a little.

I believe there is a 4ms response time, but it was only for plasma. I just did all the research recently and bought a 52" LG. I went to Circuit City, Best Buy and did research online, it seemed that everyone agreed that the best brands were Sony, Samsung and LG. Every one I talked to indicated that contrast ratio was a unfair way to compare the brands because there is no industry standard, each manufacture comes up with their own scale. I really wanted the Samsung with the red bezel, but I took advantage of Circuit City closing and got a great deal on the LG.

The specs to look for right now are 1080p / 120Hz & fastest response time possible, I believe mine was 5ms.

You're falling for the whole 120hz sales gimmick?

1080P DOES NOT HELP YOU on a 40" and under tv.. Did you see the chart I posted?

1080P with blu-ray will look IDENTICAL to a 720 with a normal dvd player on a 37" LCD over 5' away..

i know sharp Aquos does, some LG's do. 5ms is ok for most things but when you get into real fast sports action and movies things like explosions you can see it blur.

I'm not sure how much you know about tvs but other things to look at is the contrast ratio = how black are the blacks. mine is 4:000:1 and that is ok. Now they have dynamic, which i am not sure how that compares to static

Plasmas do not have a speed issue, that's why you will not see speed rating in plasmas

Speaking of Samsung does anyone know how to calibrate the damn things. My dad just bought one and needs to calibrate the screen.

AVS forums will give you a good setting...

I'd check them out

I always see this response:

"I paid to have it professionally calibrated, but your numbers make it look better"

Yeah a guy at work just got a Sylvania 36" LCD for $380 at Meijer and insists on getting a Blu-ray player for it. Is it worth it?

Sure, the placebo effect will make him happy...

I may be wrong, but everything I gather is the fact 1080p is worthless unless it is sized appropriately in the room.

if you can wait, go to sams club after the super bowl and you can get the returned tvs for some pretty amazing deals. i am not sure if they come with any warranties or return policies, i would have to guess that it comes with sams club's amazing reutrn policy of no questions asked.
