the tax on fuel is more for paying to use public roads than anything else. I can see why they enforce it like they do.

Legally, if you make your own bio-fuel, you are expected to pay the fuel taxes that would have been paid if you bought commercially available fuel. The DOT cops can check your tanks and ticket you if you aren't carrying the proper forms showing that you have paid the taxes or if you are running dyed fuel in an on-road vehicle.

I have a 68 Ford COE farm truck that is diesel. I don't dare run anything but the green stuff because this truck is a cop magnet. I was in hard times last year and I ran red fuel in my shitty half ton pickup alot. I have a one ton dually now so I'm staying away from the red stuff. State likes to check out duallys if you get stopped.

FYI: The state boys do not need to dip your tank any more to check for off road diesel. They have an indicator strip they can wipe on the inside of your exhaust pipe that will tell them if you have been naughty.

On road fuel has more additives in it than the off road fuel. It has several antifungal additives and also a anti gelling additive. When i got popped for running off road in my personal it was $5,000 pluse $100 per gal. for what its worth this has been a while ago.

as said above, if you are running veggie, homebrew bio, or red fuel, you are supposed to keep track of how much you use, and send in a check to pay for the road tax on those gallons of fuel. as previously stated, you should have your paperwork for it all on hand, to prove that you are paying the road tax.

Some fuel stations don't have seperate tanks for off road & give you on road with out the tax. You can't pump it into your vehicle's fuel tank at their station. I used to fuel our equipment up with this fuel & they will only let you buy 100 gal. at a time. You can get back in line and buy more.
