Default 2.9 ticking time bomb..

well here's the situation..

2.9 v6 in a 88 Bronco II. The motor has 150k on it. It has never had any lifter tick or knocking until i get home from the Mounds..I got stuck in a hole there and im sure water got sucked in through the intake. Eversince that time my engine has had BAD ticking and knocking.

Changed the oil twice...added some Lucas in there..this silenced the ticking but after about a week it came back in full force..

Any tips to keep the engine alive? It ran so good before..and was really quiet and smooth.

try dropping the oil pan enough to remove and clean out the oil pick up tube. this happened to a b2 my buddy had. it was a common problem on the 2.9s. you can unbolt the motor mounts and use a 4x4 and jack the motor up enough to drop the pan out of the way.

Mine had a fuel injector tick i was told. But the guy who told me knows a ton about fords. That might be the ever present ticks in the 2.9s

in the early b2's you can adjust the rocker arms and that help the tick go away also

the tick gets worse at the engine temp gets hotter. The Lucas does help, tho. Ill live with it.

I agree, it's the lifters. They get loose after a lot of miles. My 2.9 has 99000 on it, and it just ticks when you first start it cold. The rest of the time, its quiet.

my bii has 150,000 and i havent noticed any motor tick. and yes i do know what it sounds like, my 94 rqnager had 280,000 miles on the vulcan 3.0 and it ticked incessantly. ran great though, untill i broke a shift rod in the transmission. then she made the long trip to Regal's Recycling for a total net of $425.00

I believe the 2.8s had adjustable rockers, the 2.9s are hydraulic.

to stop the ticking you have to adjust the lifters it is the lifters that tick like cheapthrillb2 said and i think only up to 86 you can adjust them

lifter tick!

2.8's valve lash is adjustable
2.9's valve lash is not adjustable.

also i had a '92 tempo with a 3.0 vulcan in it, the thing rattled and ticked like no other, but it was paired with a 5speed transmission and i beat the hell out of it for the 8 months that i owned it. 142k on it and it was reliable enough to take me to ohio and back... alot.
