Default Pizza delivery question (regarding tip and delivery surcharge).

So....

If you order pizza and have it delivered do you pay the delivery surcharge AND tip? Or just the surcharge? Seems crazy to pay $9 (tip and surcharge) to have pizza delivered from about 3 miles away.

Edit: second question. What is the "right" amount to tip a driver for driving 6 miles round trip?

I tip and pay the $2 fee for delivery. Mine is about 4 miles away though.

Just the surcharge, but then again, it is less than a mile one way

The Hungry Howies i used to work at charged $2. depending how far the drive was, the driver either got .75 or $1.25 from the delivery charge.

I got a friend makin $5 per delivery paid by customer, makes another $1 per delivery from pizza place on top of makin minimum wage. So figure 8 deliveries working an 8 hour work day...he's pullin $13.40 an hour, around $107 a day.

When I delivered pizzas (15 years ago) the delivery charge was 1.50 and the driver got 50 cents of it. An average tip was $1-2. A good tip was $2+. When i get a pizza delivered I always tip at least $3-4. It's always a good idea to tip anyone that serves your food. Tip well if you want your pizza to show up fast & fresh. Go get it yourself if you're too cheap to tip.

one night, when I was working late, I ordered a pizza, and when it got there, I handed the girl the cash and told her to keep the change...went back to work...later that night, after I got home, I pulled my cash out of my pocket, still had the couple of $10's that I had to begin with, but the $50 I had in my pocket wasnt there...oops..she got a helluva tip on that delivery...

the same girl delivered to my shop a few weeks after that..I told her not to expect a tip at all...ever...a mistake like that, she should have said something...

normally, I tip the driver a buck or 2...

So you made her feel bad over your error?

On topic... I usually tip 3-5 bucks.

should she have felt bad? HELL YES! Any honest person would have spoken up, realizing that nobody is going to tip $42 for an $8 pizza...it was my mistake, or I would have went there as soon as I realized it and tried to get my money back...

Well this a hot subject in my life!! I am a supervisor for a national Pizza chain. The delivery/surcharge has all to with rising coasts to the business and surchargeas we pay to vendors (commissary,linen,etc....) and all the"hidden" costs of doing business;on top of all the normal:food, labor, rent, insurance, and utilities. The most important thing to remember are that delivery drivers live off their tips. As far as the distance you live from any pizza shop is irrevlavant, most delivery areas are set up so any one point is no farther than a ten minute drive one way. Not where I work, but some chains pay sub minimum wage and require drivers to report tips directly to employer to equal a combined wage to equal or excede that perticular states minimum wage. (breathe....) I make it clear to all new hires, and preach to current employees " Tipping is not an obligation", I also remind them that tip stands for To Insure Promptness. It is just plain shabby not to tip a delivery driver! I also truly believe that you get what you pay for too. I realize that almost everyone in our part of the country is feeling the financial crunch. But put this in to per spective. A driver pays insurance on his his vehicle avg $3.35 a day, avg delivery round trip 10 miles $.85 fuel, avg gas reimburment per run $1.20. So if a driver takes ten runs thats a total of $11.85 in cost and $12.00 in reimbursment. That does not even consider up keep and vehicle cost. I know some people may say well maybe the owner should pay more;but, not everyone will pay more for a pizza to achieve this. This a extremely delicate balance between sales volume and order price, and if you fall it's like going 50 mph hor the top of test hill. Nobody wants to piss off the customer more than the driver or the owner. At the same time no one likes picking glass out of their face with a disalocated shoulder and two broken legs. And thats how personal drivers take getting stiffed. Right, wrong, or indifferent 99% of the drivers I know truly want to do a great job and make our customers happy. When they don't get a tip it's personal, they wonder what we did wrong to the customer. The customer is always right, and if you do not treat them as such,; with a smile, you'll never get a tip...Ever!

Happy Tipping, rember it's the holidays!

you fukc up and get pissed at her? YOU told her to "keep the change and you get pissed at her?

I work for a hungry howie's, the store charges a surcharge of $3.25, I see $0.50 of that.... thats right.

Fifty fucking pennies every time i leave the store to take you your dinner, I drive my ass off to get it to you in time, It will never be cold, rarely is it wrong.
not tipping the pizza guy is telling the guy that you could give a shit less about him.

there are some people i deliver too that order the same thing every time, medium thin and crispy with 3 toppings, comes to $14.03 every time.
They live in a upperclass devlopment in a pretty big house, Mercedes in the garage parked next to the newer land cruiser. and every time i get a $10, 3 $1's, 4 quarters and 3 pennies.
Now when i have to deliver to them, I take my time, sometimes i get gas before i take it there.

uggghhh!!!! okay i'm done now
