Default M91-30 Mosin Nagant barrel question

A few weeks ago I went into Dunhams for a sale that they had on m91-30s

I bought one and took it up north with some of the surplus ammo that they had in 7.62 x 54r

I chambered a round and went to shoot the gun and decided that I should at least attempt to insert the tip of a round into the barrel. It would not fit. The tapered tip of the bullet would only go into the barrel end 3/8 of an inch then stop. The bullet flares at least 1mm bigger than the barrel before it goes inside the casing.

I took the ammo back thinking that they gave me the wrong stuff, but it was exactly the same dimensions as a box of Winchester 7.62 x 54r. I had to return with the gun late last night and showed them what I meant. All 5 of the display rifles were such that the entire tip of the bullet would go in. Mine would not.

The night manager took it and said that it would be returned to Vintage Gun for repairs. I was fine with that. Now someone else just called (Store Manager) and said it was fine. Some barrels are counterbored an inch or two at this end and mine was not.

Does any of this make sense. I told him to try what I did himself and let me know what happens.

I haven't heard from him yet. Maybe it blew up

Anybody else want to help me sound smart with their advise on here please speak up... I really like the old gun and don't want to leave it above my fireplace. I didn't charge it or else I'd already be on the phone trying to take care of it that way.

Opinions?

Steveo - the Stacksaw pic gives you instant credibility. I will do that.

I just talked to another Mosin guy and he said that was pretty much the fit with a low use barrel so ima gonna make it explode. I was just overly cautious with the old shit.

Thanks!

Just secure the rifle and then tie a loop around the trigger if you're nervous. Tug. Fire. Enjoy intact face when it assplodes.

I'd be nervous about that shit too. I'd probably do the string pull about a dozen times.

I've got a mosin nagant - you'll have a lot of fun. If you buy decent ammo you're shoulder will be sore...

I like the caliber - always wanted one of these to share the ammo with

Cool guys, thanks!

I haven't wanted to fire something this bad since I bought my M&P 15 a few months back. I'm hoping that they have an after thanksgiving sale on the WASRs - I was staring at those tonight when I picked it back up.

Did they do anything to the barrel?

exactly, the "bullet check" shows muzzle erosion. if yours is that tight you got a good one. i love me some mosin nagant, i am building a precision tactical one right now. there are some nice little upgrades out there for the mosin. I have a rock solid scope mount, action bedding pillars, and screw set, a John Huber anti friction ball adjustable 30oz break trigger, a big millet scope, and a richards microfit stock on order I should have after Jan. If you reload it gives you a much better ammo selection, but there is nothing wrong with the factory loads avalable for hunting and plinking, just be sure to windex the bore if your shooting corrosive primers.
scope mounts, etc.
