I've always been a Nikon fan for SLR, and a Canon fan for P&S. For an entry level SLR though, I think it's a toss up between the two. I was not a fan of the Rebels when they first came out because they used alot of quick wearing plastic internals (gears and such) to save weight and they tended to break down quickly. Dont know much about the current ones or how the low end Nikons compare.

I think either one would be a safe bet for a casual user. Pick up both and play w/ them side by side and make your decision from there.

FWIW, I've got a Canon S5. It's Canons high end P&S w/ alot of their EOS technology (processor, lens internals, image sensor, etc). It has alot of SLR features minus interchangeable lenses. It is a very nice camera.

If live.com is still doing the cash back deal look for whatever you decide on ebay. I picked up a new D60 kit for $400 (after the cash back deal).
