Default Windshield or NO Windshield

I originally was going to tube from the cowl back, keeping the floor, on the XJ and ditch the windshield.

Now that I've heard both sides of the fence, I'm not sure as to which way I'm leaning anymore.

What are some of your experiences, pro's, con's, etc...?

Pros,
Wheeling is cool without a windshield. Visibility and the open air feeling is great.

Cons,
It can suck in bad weather. I've gotten dust in my eyes making them sting. Biggest thing for me is higher speed driving where dust, mud and rain can be a nusiance.

Finally, no windshield = not street legal.

ohhh, that's a good one to think about, although as much as I like driving mine around ... the whole thing is pretty much not street legal, so I'd be taking my chances either way.

Yeah, really its going to be rain and snow that are the kickers.

I wheeled for years with a CJ5 which had no top, no heat, but had half doors and a windshield. Loved having the windshield down when I could, but nice to have it up for bad stuff.

With an XJ, you have to consider how are you going to keep everything in the dash dry if you lose the windshield. They've got crappy enough wiring to start. I'd be a lot more worried about the fuse block, cluster, hvac, etc, without it there.

Its not bad with nice summmer rain, or reasonable snow not to have the windshield. Unfortunately, you sometimes get worse, like the rain we got in canada last year (3.5" in a day, roads were washed away or underwater), or freezing rain (like we got on our last snow run), that stuff just isn't fun to have on you.

If you don't think those kind of spots will be an issue, then lose it. Or make something that can be removed without major work.

On this note, this was my main concern ... not so much my face. It's not pretty.

You should come buy Frank's shell and use it to experiment before you start tearing your shit up.

I prefer no windshield for a few reasons. One, I'd hate taking it on and off since there is no way in hell it'd last upright and would just get torn off if it was folded down. Plus my cowl area gets beat on so it won't really fit anymore anyways. Two, windshields get covered in shit reducing visibility. I'd much rather have nothing there to get covered. I keep googles in my rig at all times which takes care of the dust/rain,whatever in the eyes when traveling at any speed.

Sure it's a bit colder since the heater isn't as effective if you even have one, but that's what clothes are for. In rain, I'd just wear a "real" rainsuit like Grundens (crab fishing shit) or something similar.

yes, because that is how I want to spend my next $500.

I'm pretty sure I need not worry about tearing my shit up.

Its not $500 anymore. That was before a bunch more of it sold. I'm just too lazy to change it.

I will never wheel with a windshield ever again. The plexiglass/lexan idea is ok, but once it gets dirty it is a biatch and a biatch to clean it without making it hazzy.

I use to wheel without a roof too, but on this build I installed aluminum roof which took care of most of the rain problems on the trail. When driving at like 25mph, rain can pelt you, but it just depends on your threshold to tolerate it. I am willing to tolerate all of the con's in order to not have a windshield.

If I ever remember, I will get some googles or something. Normally I just wear sunglasses, but when it is raining it is usually too dark for sunglasses.

I have a Lexan windshield that attaches to my cage with wing nuts.

I use it on the street when I rarely drive on it, and I use if offroad when I wheel somewhere it's going to be cold and dry.

Since it's Lexan if it gets muddy it's damn near worthless, and unless you carry enough water to rinse the mud off, your going to scratch the hell out of it trying to clean it.

It's a cool option for me, just like having a bikini top, windjammer, and upper soft doors. If I had to have them all on permanently, I would chose only a top.

Usually I just wear whatever glasses I bicycle in.

when i use to actually wheel, I normally took the windshield off or at least fold it down. Was tons better, I had a face mask and goggles for cold/rain/dust

Fab up a mount for a CJ/YJ/TJ/JK windshield so you can fold it down when you want.
