Arrow SOLD - 1974 AMC 401, now just a longblock (reduced)

No exhaust manifolds. Has TH400 flexplate on it and includes the factory valve covers and timing cover/water pump shown. Its a 71-78 block casting with a late 1973 tag with the correct "Z" VIN code for the motor. Head casting matched valve cover tag dates (will post them) and are 58cc chambers. If you already have an AMC V8, everything else will transplant onto this one. However, I do have additional accessories available for extra (HEI's, non-AIR manifolds, PS brackets, etc).

Bought this from H aggar's buddy Mike, who had it installed in a FSJ that would allegedly embarass a lot of cars. It has been stored inside both before and after I got it. I don't know what's been done to it on the inside, as it was going to be plenty of power regardless and I was going to install/run it exactly as-is.

A couple of the factory intake manifold heat shield rivets were found in the pan, but they did not appear to have caused any problems. I'm working on getting my hands on an engine stand for inspection purposes.

The Edelbrock intake and carb shown have been sold and are not included.

$600. Available immediately. Cash, PayPal, or USPS Money Order only. No other money orders. First come, first served based on receipt of payment.

The only item I will accept against it in trade is a 78-79 HPD60.

SOLD.

When was the last time this engine ran? Can you do a compression check?

I've never run it. Don't have a tester myself.

Did you finally get an engine stand and check rod and main grinds?

If you know there were rivots in the pan, I'm assuming you have access to the main and rods caps, if you take a minute and verify their grind on the bearing stamps, I'd be a serious buyer. I already took one chance on a 401 this year, and got burned by a cracked cylinder. BTW, love your two TOOL refernces, wish Id thought of that.

I understand your logic, but the assumption is incorrect. Someone else had taken the pan off and showed me the pieces, which I recognized as the rivets.

Not following the tool references, though.

Tool = Doing business with "Kennedy" on GL? See this thread for details.

I had a tool sell me a 401, which I paid for in paypal, I drove to get it 2 days later, and he resold it on me. He had another 401 which he knocked a few bucks off of, and when I tore it down, it had cracked cylinders. Anyway, now I'm a shy buy...

I dont wanna get a crank ground down 0.020 for either rods or mains. Blocks ground to 0.030 can always be resleeved. Additional rivets can get into oil galleries and hide... How well did you know the guy you bought it from? Is it really a swap, drop, fuel and pop? I'd like to put one in in my 75 CJ5, so I'm really thinking about the long term haul...

We wasn't a personal friend of mine, but rather a friend of a reputable member here. Just can't do anything until I get hold of a stand.

I need like 4 of them so I can not only inspect/take shit apart, but roll all motors around instead of dragging their wooden cradles across the floor one grunt at a time. Sucks when the ratchet strap I'm using to drag it comes off and I go flying into the torpedo heater.

So then, if you can't verify some internal properties even with help, how solid is your "FIRM"? I'll $hit you not, I have cash in hand, and have been carefully shopping for this project. We both know $900 is the current average price for a running 401. I'm not sure thats fair if the the internals are a guess and the assembly has more one life to give. I'll be in Tennessee for a week, and will continue to shop. If I dont find anything, I'll send ya a PM with an offer, if you still want to sit on it after that, then you must have some great memories with that thing, I know how it is, block after block piles up...

I don't need to sell this engine at all. That's how solid it is.

BTW, I PM'd you at about 11am regarding that engine stand.
