bolt up to the 4.0: M50D-R2 (don't bother with any other stick), C5 (very rare - hard to find flex plate), newer 5r55e (fully electric A4LD in a nut shell)

After market: Advanced adapters makes a 700r4 kit, and IIRC someone over on RRORC.com was making an adapter kit for virtually any transmission you wanted.....and, raptor transmissions makes a "high strength A4LD," though that's like an oxymoron....

Basically, the cheapest option with strength is the M5OD - they'll take quite a beating....swap isn't bad either if you get all the components from a donor truck, and even the pedal goes in easily

R1 comes in housings for the 4.0L V6 (and technically 2.9L V6) as a set, and I believe the 2.3/2.5L and 3.0L are interchangeable (don't quote me on that).

The R2 is for a fullsize, and I think that it only comes in he SBF pattern.

Both trannies have integral cast bells.

i knew the applications and that the bell housing is part of the trans but i didnt know if, as mentioned in an erlier post, if a m5odr2 could be bolted to a 4.0 or a 2.9 which are the same bolt pattern i believe. maybe it was just a typo. i know the R2 is stronger and if its posable to bolt in the stronger trans later i would as i happen to hav one.

Unless you use an adapter for the 4.0L to the SBF pattern, the R2 won't fit.

The 4.0L and 2.9 are the same pattern, but not the SBF pattern.
