much better. 8 years ago I had a lower paying job, no house, no play cash and crappy health insurance.

Preach it.

I know that 8 years ago I was sleeping a little better, my ass hurts a little more now.

Those dang gas prices have pushed me to buy a motorcycle......uhhh...I mean...dang!

As far as food prices, they haven't risen to the point where they would effect me. I don't own much stock, and I'm cool with an apartment for a while, but I'll hopefully grab a house before the market rebounds...

8 years ago I was sitting on a ship off the coast of Israel for a few months. Am I better off now? Yes. I think that's a no brainer.

Of course, there have been ups and downs between those two points and the ups have easily outweighed the downs.

Gas, Food, and Home Heating have all gone up, but look at the deal you can get on a house right now.

Losses on Wall Street are only for the people that are in the wrong position.

For ever dollar lost one is earned, if your on the losing end thats your own fault.

I was told when I sold oil futures at 125 and oil was going up I was crazy. oil was going to 200 and I would be broke.

YUK YUK YUK, you see where oil is today.

I say I have gained a lot in 8 years, but things are destablizing very fast. I find it hard to look ahead and not see issues coming for many people and myself. I will be lucky to come through the layoffs unscathed.

I have been in the same Automotive based industry for about 20 years and I experienced the gravytrain years back in the 90's when we could sell products and services to the auto companies at 33% and more profit easily , now things are lean and profit is tight but my view of it is it made companies more honest and shut down those who lived on fat profits . My company does not have the backlog of work it used to but we do have enough to keep running steady.

I am living a better life now, However I do feel things may get rough in the future that may set me back but not crush me.

8 Years ago I was single, and making a good living. That was pretty sweet.
Now I am married....so not as sweet. But I have an awesome son, so that is way sweet.

8 years ago the auto industry was still booming up there and work was plentiful.

now rebuilding... not making as much money, but regained my family that I grew from trying to make more $$

So Yes I am better off from 8 years ago.

In retrospect, I should have framed the question as "Are you better of financially." as some of the examples of being better off have nothing to do with politics, religion or government chat
