Yes. Granted 8 years ago I was in HS, but I now make more money than either of my parents ever have, combined, without a college degree.

hmmmm.... 8 years ago I was a sophmore in highschool, and was detailing cars at a local dealership... so I didn't have a whole ton going on. But I'm doing alright for myself now, but I sure do have a lot more debt than I did then.

not trying to start an argument or anything, but how much better is it when you take inflation into account?

I'll bite.

Professionally? yes. 8yrs ago I was entering my 5th year of employment at my first job after college graduation. Within 5 years, I had received two promotions and reached the glass ceiling. I was generally unhappy, my 401k had taken a massive hit, and I was ready to get out of the auto industry.

Personally? yes. My wife and I were engaged. We now have two beautiful children, a modest home, and an obnoxious dog.

Spiritually/emotionally? Yes, for all the life experience I've acquired during this time. Thanks to my job, I've seen most of the US and a few other countries.

Only negative changes during the past 8 years compared to day are: I don't have a "rig" and the damn hairline keeps receding.

What does that have to do with the question asked? I was 16, with a job in a hardware store winters and for the city in the summers. I make 20x's more now than I did part time year round then.

i think its kind of a loaded question.

most people do better later on in life. i know thats not always the case but it seems to be that way for many people.

Yes.

8 years ago, I was only 14, so it's not really a good comparison. I was working side jobs and was largely unmotivated/uncertain about who I was and where I wanted to go in the future.

Now I have 97% of a full college education and 5 years of work experience in something that I love. I'm engaged and I am incredibly happy with how my life is progressing!

I think the responses thus far support your statement.

I know that I am. I make more than double my salary from 8 years ago, I have two more kids, two less cats, and my 2WD Ford Ranger magically turned into a TJ.

I think the only people who can't say YES are those who made foolish investments in the Tech boom and those who have lost their jobs because of our capitalistic society. We all want things cheaper and better, it just so happens that those cheaper and better things are not American made.

What about the price of gas and food? Home heating costs? Losses on wall street? Do these facters affect anyones standard of living? I know they affect my parents in MI heavily...

Prices will always go up though. Except for wall street right now the other items are going to steadily increase over time.
My wife and I are much, much better off. We built a new home 2 years ago (and a new shop for me) both have greatly increased our incomes and have saved a good bunch of money. Although our 401k's have taken a recent hit but were only in our early 30's so we'll be good. It would suck to be retired or wanting to retire soon and see your investments drop but if thats the case your money should be in less volitile investments.
