Default SLR Recommendations

Hey
I have thought about getting a digital slr and was looking around at them. Anyone have any suggestions or ones i should stay away from? Was kinda looking at the canon rebels. Need to stay on the cheaper side(if there is one) so i can ask for it for xmas.
Thanks

I got a Rebel XTI with 3 lens ( 2 Canons and a off brand wide angle) , 2gb card , 3 filters and some other pieces off Ebay for $750 . From Barclays Photo which I heard some bad crap about them scamming people or selling non-us cameras. Of course I found all this out after buying it. But it showed up and has been a great camera.

This is where I have gotten quite a bit of my equipment, good deals, never had a problem.

Buy what you like!

Go to the store and play with both Canon and Nikon, go with which one feels right for you. I grew up in a Nikon house... I still borrow stuff from dad

If you can still find them the XTi is being clearanced out at some places to make room for the XSi. I picked mine up for $400 even, and then the next week it was $325. That was the body and lens.

Nikon. Crutchfield.com is where i purchase some of my stuff and they seem to be pretty cheap for the D40 kit. I think i paid 479 for mine with an 18-55 kit lens.

Only downfall to the D40/D40X/D60 would be not having the ability to focus on a non-motor lens, meaning most older Nikkor glass will meter on the camera, however it will not focus. You will have to manually focus everything that doesn't say built in motor. I have not found this to be a problem yet for me, and most new glass has the built in motor. The only lens i would love to have is the 50mm f/1.4 which is comin soon in af-s
