Default 400 vs 351 w

my bros ford has a 351/400 and its got a few things done to it(cam, intake, headers few other things) i was wondering if the 400 is really just a boat anchor and is worth the cost to built it up a lil bit, it turns his 38s no prob but he had this crazy idea of a 347 stroker lmk opinions on this 400 jasper thanx

run the M motor until it breaks (especially if it turns over 38's); then put a 460 in it. 302,351w,347 stroker he will have to change over to a small block c-6.

Thats a big depends.

is it the 400 or the 351M? A general comparison is that the 351W is a beefier version of the 302. as the 400/351M are beefier version of the 351 Cleveland. The 351M is a destroked 400 and came after it's introduction.

The biggest killer for the M blocks was emissions, they came out right around where they got mandated, and we hadn't quite figured better ways to deal with them, so they got tuned back, hardcore.

The 400 is one of the longest stroke V8 ford has produced (I think) it's right about 4", and uses Cleveland heads. There's definitely potential for them.

Most of the restrictions are cleared up with the intake, the cam, and headers so he's most of the way there. Pumping the CR up a bit with some pistons or maybe just a nice aftermarket cylinder head would turn it into a different monster. *another edit: The factory Cr was 8:1 or even less in some cases I think. I'm pretty sure the quench is wayyyy off as well, that seems to be a popular way Ford tuned back their engines across the board.

If it's the 400, and he already has that done to it, definitely worth the coin to build a little hotter, if it's the 351, still probably better off than building a whole new engine. They were meant solely as truck engines and are pretty heavy duty.

*edit:

Ahh yes, the transmission issues too. The M blocks use the big block bellhousing pattern.

If it can light 38's up in your driveway, what more could you ask for out of a 347?
