Question Joe the Plumber and taxes

"To be honest with you, that infuriates me," plumber Joe Wurzelbacher, "It's not right for someone to decide you made too much---that you've done too good and now we're going to take some of it back."

"That's just completely wrong," he added.

School me and Joe about US taxation. I thought we already had a progressive tax?

A progressive tax is a tax imposed so that the tax rate increases as the amount subject to taxation increases

A proportional tax is a tax imposed so that the tax rate is fixed as the amount subject to taxation increases.

i heard he doesnt even hasapermit to be a plumber.

Besides I think he was referring to the making over 250K and being taxed more, so if he made under 250K he would be taxed less. Other than that i dont have anything to contribute, i believed we had a progressive tax as well. *shrug*

His point was if he dose good with his bus. and makes over 250000 he will be taxed heavily, whats the incentive to grow the bus and hire more people/make more money in this situation?

But wouldn't several small businesses be more beneficial than one huge plumbing company. That way there would be 5 people Making a theoretical 200K/year, and each company employing 4 plumbers making 50K/year. Or one person making 1,000,000/year, with his company employing 18 plumbers that make 50K/year.

well nothing says that you can't make more than 250K/year. there's just probably an area where your take home is about the same between 240K and 270K. Then after that who knows.

5 owners with 4 employees each = 25 people

1 owner with 18 employees = 19 people

Can we presume that the 19 people are doing the same volume as the 25 people??

Can we presume that the one company is paying $900,000.00 in wages and the 5 companies are paying $1,000,000.00 in wages???

Can we presume that the math dosen't work???? LOL

That was kind of the point, with more workers they would be more productive, have less low spots, etc. The bigger company should be more efficient, and shouldn't have as many low spots.

It was just an example to think about, not to be taken too literal. If you have 5 workers making 1000 parts per week, it doesn't mean 10 workers will make 2000 parts per week.
