Default Locker for an 8.25 **** delete*****

I know its a long shot but..... I'm looking for a locker for my 8.25. It's a 94 so I think its a 27 spline w/ 3.08 gears. Thanks.

If I could I would! That is the cheepest way to go by far. But I have to drive it on the road and the highway. That and tires are over $200/ea.

the 8.25 has very limited aftermarket support. you can get an auburn or a detroit just depends on what you are looking for. the cheapest bet would probably be a lunch box locker or something like that, lockrite from richmond is pretty good for what they are.

I've got a 29 spline Detriot Locker that I used for a few months. I bought it new and has about 1500 miles on it. It's your for $375.00.

I'll consider splitting the rear off this package:

http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthread.php?t=69078

Its ready to rock with good brakes, would be a triple upgrade (gears, shafts, and locker) in light of what you are currently running, and its a bolt-in. No gear setup required like you'd have to do if you bought a full-case traction device separately. Paying to set-up 3.07's again if you end up buying a full-case traction device is wasted money. At least buy some gears and just deal with 2wd for a while if you're going to go that route.

The price on the entire package is negotiable and I'll take payments on it if you are interested.

jeepin20: i'd jump on that in a heartbeat but I failed to mention mine is a pre '97 so I have a 27 spline.

PPounder: I'm doing gears this winter. this is a baby step project I can only do a little at a time. I'm actually suprised that you dont have one in your warehouse! how much for the 8.25?

As mentioned before, locker support for the 8.25 is limited and the options that do exist are costly. You are going to cost yourself a lot of money by "baby-stepping" that particular axle, and in the end you'll have spent a lot on a 27-spline 8.25.

If I were you and didn't have the budget to do this in chunks, I'd go buy a matched stock 3.55 non-disco HPD30/29-spline 8.25 set to bolt in for now with a Lock-Right and not lay a finger on your existing axles. This will give you a much more worthwhile platform to build on, somewhat alleviate the gearing issue, and allow you to get locked prior to the gear job so as to not waste money.

-or-

Buy Jeepin20's locker, pick up a grenaded or cheap later XJ 8.25 to raid for the 29-spline shafts, and re-gear with those.

-or-

Buy a complete and good later 8.25, buy a Lock-Right, and have that one re-geared later when you are ready.

Go to some vendor sites to get an idea of the cost of 8.25 lockers and then shop around for the gear install. The rear axle I listed is $800. A new Detroit for that axle is around $700 by itself. Some vendors will be less, but don't forget to factor in tax and shipping on such items + the gear install if you end up with a full-case locker (people forget that). Here's DTS's pricing just as an example:
