Sorry if i sound like an idiot, but i've never been to the mounds. Is it a designated offroad place or just some state land? And Is it open year round? I after Pre4runner and I build my bumpers and sliders in 2 wks, i want to go somewhere close but fun. I only have 4.5" lift so i wanna see what the Xj can do.

cgrooters, you would have a good time at the Mounds. your rig would do fine on many of the trails and there will be a lot of people there to help you out if you get hung up. It's 10 bucks to get in and there is no charge for others in the car. Plus it's a good chance to meet people from this web site. I'll be there in my black hemi YJ. Look forward to some good wheeling. It's going to be clear skies and 78...

Yah that is my intentions is meeting people from the site for some wheeling buddies and maybe get invitations to further events and what not. I wont be able to make it out until after we get my recovery stuff built. Just cause of the money i have to throw in to build that stuff. But Very soon after i want to plan something. So keep an eye out in a few weeks if you wanna go! Thanks for the info as well.

you will do fine for sure man... the mounds is anything from mild to wild, but if you dont want body damage then try to stay out of the woods, and stay out of the water holes, trust me, they have been dug out by tractor tires many times... anyway look for me, I drive a green and silver beat up xj with 1 tons and 40's, hope to see you there, and feel free to jump in with us on a trail ride as well!!

The woods aren't that bad. If you pay attention, you won't get any body damage (been back there twice now with nothing worse than trail pinstripes, but if you are concerned about body panels, I'd suggest following someone else, that way you can see whether you're likely to bend metal). The holes in the woods aren't too bad either, but I have seen at least one that swallowed 33" tires, so again, it's good to have someone to follow, especially if they know the park.

Now the mud holes NOT back on the woods...those are another story. There are a lot that you can do with no worries (and that's from me with a stock XJ), but some of em have been excavated by the BDMTs to the point of swallowing trucks whole. This is another area where it's nice to have someone to follow with some experience in the park. If you don't have that luxury, then just pay attention. Unless you KNOW how deep the hole is (having seen someone else go through it before you, or you've already been through it once), don't go plowing through it in 4th gear. Ease into it slowly, and feel out the depth. Chances are, you could get stuck anyway, but that way you know you won't get stuck and sink.

Sadly, I can't afford to take a day off on the weekends, so unless I get scheduled with a weekend day off, I probly won't make it again this year.
