What do they need? I was thinking that if they don't need much, it would be cool to repair them and give them away to good kids that don't have bikes.

chain 9.99 - 14.99
pads 3.99 per bike
cables derailer 1.99 each
brake cables 2.99 each
housing 1.99 a foot

about $30 in parts
labor is about $40 or so for that kind of stuff so a shop isn't going to recommend it. and i wouldn't.

I would use penetrating oil on the chain to free it up. as long as it moves and the brakes work give them to good will or any sorta halfway house

Don't put money into them though on sale at walmart and k-mart they go for $50-$70

No im simply suggesting you buy new bikes and walk them over instead. I work day in and out on this stuff, many times its better to scrap it.

The shop i work at will take trade ins like this and all we do is make sure its safe and the chain moves, then we take them to local places.

didn't mean to be a jerk about it
