What are the years for the best blocks in the 302 or 351W? I have an 83 HO 302, but Ford guys are telling me the casting is not very good. This motor has been sitting in my barn for about 10 years, so its kinda rusty.
It all depends on how much power you are planning on making and at what rpm.
late model 302's are good for about 400-450 hp, after that they start to crack above the main brgs. I have seen some run forever at 500 hp and have seen blocks split in two at 450 hp. There were some made in Mexico that may be stronger and the early blocks are also stronger.
351W's are a little stronger, most blocks built after 74 can handle 600-650hp if rpms are kept around 7k or lower.
The 69-74 blocks are stronger, and I have seen 700+hp without trouble.
