Did a little more work today:

I stripped and primed the fork, fenders and chain guard. I painted the wheels red (changed my mind, copper is out, old school red is in). I also packed the headset bearings and re-assembled the fork/frame. After everything was pretty much dry, I reassembled the fenders on the bike. So this is where I'm at.

I'm not looking forward to putting the wheel bearings back together

packing wheel bearings is no big deal, run to a bike shop and grab a couple of cheap cone wrenches, they make life much much easier.

You have inspired me to buy a Schwinn chopper and motorize it. Good winter project.

If my job situation doesn't drastically change in the next 90days or so, I will be building one as a commuter.

i got the wheel guts back together and mounted the tires. I just went with some cheap kenda's 26x1.75" we had at the hardware store, no whitewalls So if everything goes according to plan, I should be able to mount the wheels on the bike tonight, put the chain on and ride it less motor. Supposedly the 80cc's will be back in stock tomorrow through blue collar bikes. stay tuned.

P.S. playing with this bike has me scanning craigslist for other gems. If I was to do a true, ride it everyday commuter bike, from what I've read, I'd be doing this with a full suspension mountain bike with some slick tires. who knows, maybe I'll do that too.

The flipped bars looked better, IMO.

Overall, I really like this thing. Nice work.

so far-

bike: free

wire wheel: $3

new ball bearings: $3.00

tires/tubes 15$

spray paint: 8$

engine kit: $217 shipped

probably going to get a headlight kit, mirror, etc.

most of the stuff I get for cost though, through the hardware.

thanks. I think it's going to come out pretty good.
