Default Project: 80cc Schwinn

I aquired my grandpa's 1950's Schwinn Bicycle the other day and am going to clean it up, repair the bearings, motor-ize it. Here's what i'm starting with:

Here's where I'm at right now:

I'm going to add an engine kit from here:

http://www.bluecollarbike.com/index.html

that will look a lot like this:

Here we go.

Cool. Keep us posted on how it turns out. You should have that frame blasted & powder coated...it would look really nice!

I think you can buy new bikes like that, I say sell the old one for big bucks, buy a new one and put the motor kit on it, either way its cool, by the way my friend has one like that that is a new bike with one of those motors on it, pretty sweet.

hahahaha... not every old schwinn beach cruiser is worth money. They made millions and millions of them. Certain ones to the right people, sure, but not every old one.

Is it going to run on unicorn farts ya hippie? should be pretty cool when done, if you put flames on it.

um, there is a pic of the muffler. I'm sure it will sound like a bad ass weedwacker. Primary usage, maybe commuting back and forth to town. Probably take it up to blissfest with me for commuting back and forth to the campsites (hook up a trailer and haul gear). Just for fun mostly. I think it makes the bikes look neat too.

I have that same Bluecollarbike kit on a newer Schwinn.

BTW it not really 80cc. Its closer to 69-70cc.

We have made 3 bikes out of those engine kits at our shop. We were doing it with the Schwinn bikes that have OCC stickers all over them and look like little choppers. They were really easy to build them on since the rear wheel already comes with a free spinning hub.

We made our own mounts for the engine though. But the frames started cracking so we started reinforcing things more and more.

We had some strange problems with the engines at first also. You are gonna notice how shitty some of the parts are too hah.

We rode two of them from Traverse City, to Buckley and back a few times. On a "Shwopper" it took just over an hour ride. Ours went around 30mph.

Sometime soon I will snap a couple pictures of them.

By the way, full straight pipes on them sound like the most terrible noise in the world.

They are fun as hell.

We sold one to a guy who did not have his license and lived right in town. He got pulled over and was looking at facing some jail time since its like a half ass moped and you are not allowed to drive any kind of motored vehicle at all if your license is taken I guess.

At the hearing thing though, the judge waved it like it was a joke, so that was good.

The things were probably the most fun I have had in a long time though.

yeah I know, I started a post there the other day : http://www.motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?t=15319

I buffed a little more paint off the frame and primed it. I also cleaned up one of the wheels and primed it. Like I said, I'm going to paint the frame/fork satin black. I'm going to paint the wheels/handlebars metallic copper + clear coat. I'm going to Mt. Pleasant tomorrow, so I'll stop by Motorless Motion and pick up some new headset bearings + wheel bearings. The crank seems to be solid, no wiggle, so I'm going to leave that alone.

Possible Parts List: (if you were thinking of getting me a birthday present ;)

Mirror

Ape Hangers

Grips

Panaracer Uff Da!'s

Id just buy an entire new headset. a cheap 1" threaded job would cost less than $20, and will be much nicer than throwing new bearings in the old cups. Id also pull the cranks, and at lease re-pack the bearings with fresh grease.

BTW, I totally want one of these. I haven't been riding my bike to work because its just out of my range, but now you are making me think. It would pay for itself in gas savings in less than a month.
