Default Found a 9" Rear For $100

Found a guy with a god 9" rear axle, but not sure what it came out of. Width is about 53" flange to flange. It has 2 dimples on the back, and a pinion snubber on the front. Where are the #'s on the housing that I can look up?

Sounds like early Bronco, unless it has a fill plug or is missing the hump (housing is mostly round).

Should be a tag somewhere, I don't believe there are any numbers on the housing.

Housing is round, and there is a sight plug about half way up the back.

Then it's probably a car axle.

Not necessarily a bad thing, it's still a 9".

Cool, thanks. I'll pick it up this week sometime and dive into it. I'm going to put it in my Ranger project.

No numbers on a 9in,the tag is a bolt on and is usually thrown out the first time the fluid was changed. if it has a pinion snubber on it then it came from a car. It is probably a 27 spline

Its a crap shoot. I've seen them with both 5 on 5.5 and 5 on 4.5 patterns.

Since I'm changing to a spool and a racing gear, can I run new 31-spline axles as well?

You bet! Just have to cut some long axles down ang get them splined or order em. The housing will handle either 27 or 31.

because of the shaft size

if he would go to 31 spline shafts, he would also now have the big bearings

9" came in 28-spline or 31-spline axles.

The 8" has a 25-spline pinion gear and the 9" has a 28-spline pinion gear. Also, I believe the axle housing size steps down out toward the flanges.

Not exactly....

The shaft diameter is the same at the bearing for 28-spline and 31-spline axles on most cars and they used the small bearing.

Depending what this axle came out of will determine if you use the small or large bearing, not what spline axle you want to use.

Well, got the 9" home. It is from a Mercury Cougar, or so the guy thinks. The brake line block is on the driver's side, and it's a hair over 54" flange to flange. According to a couple websites I looked at, this matches up with a Cougar/Mustang. But, it's too wide for my Ranger. It's almost 5" wider, so I'd have to narrow it. At this point, I may not get to the truck anyway, I'm looking at moving to Tennessee.
