Default New offroad trailer project

Here is a picture of my latest project. So far, the frame and box have been blasted, the frame has 2 fresh coats of POR15 along with the bottom of the tub, new wire harness, rebuilt axle, spring over conversion and new 33" x 10.5 super swampers. I can use 1 spare for the trailer and CJ now. I've got 3 jerry cans to mount and I'm going to figure out how to mount a cooler externally (probably on a rack on the back). I also plan on applying decals to make it match my CJ and Herculiner for the inside of the bed. Pretty fun project. Not alot of cost and simple to do.

I was thinking about ripping apart a rotton MJ and using the bed as a trailer. Not sure exactly what mods I'd have to do to the unibody, but I'm sure it is plausible. Then I want to put the same tires on the trailer and match it to the XJ. That would be badass.

the rear of an MJ is a real frame....they only have a unibody under the cab/front clip.

There was one of those stolen recently, a post about it was in the pub. Search for stolen trailer and you can see some pics.

It's an M416 Military trailer. They are kinda hard to find lately. I did some wheeling and dealing to get this one.

Nice trailer!

any particular reason you went with the pintle hitch, or was that how they all come?

(its a military thing)

don't have to worry about the size of your hitch/ball

those did come with pintle hitch from the military. allows for more movement at the hitch offroad than a ball style.

Yep, they all came that way. Since it's primarily an offroad trailer, I figured I would leave it. They tend to be a little noisier, but allow for better articulation.

If you decide you don't want the pintle, I will trade you for my modified ball hitch that mounts in the original pintle location. You still retain the swivel with the convenience of a ball hitch. The pintle was cut and the ball hitch welded to the old mount, common mod to them.

I hope you got some $$ out of the Bantam you traded too, that thing was clean and complete....

I love these little trailers, though 99grandTJ has put more miles on mine then I have

I took off the M416 wheels and tires and mounted up my CJ wheels and tires I had.

The hitch is OD now, this was from wen I bought it.

Here is mine I straightened the fender and changed the wheels, that is about it.

No cash but lot's of extra goodies to even it out!!!

You've got a real nice looking trailer yourself! I see you have replace the rear lights, was this because they broke off via tree, rock, etc.? I only ask because mine came with the Mutt style lights (non blackout) and i'm trying to decide whether i go with custom lights flush mounted in the trailer frame (included in the trade also) or with the originals. I like the looks of the originals, but they seem like they could be a branch magnet.

My lights were changed out when I got it, I have been trying to locate some originals or similar to go in their place, same with the lunette. My trailer is being painted gray with navy markings to match my flatty when I paint it. (The flatty will look Navy as well)

One of those lights IS broken though, 99grandTJ caught one on his other trailer moving ir around. I was going to replace them with LED military replica lights if I couldn't find originals.

I plan on outfitting mine as an adventure trailer with a tent setup on top of it eventually.

If I decide to go with the in-frame lights, I'll let you know and shoot you a couple pictures of the lights I have. I also have the orignial parking brake assembly that I don't have any need for, don't know if you need that also. I'm planning on selling that on Ebay or something.

I'd love to add a tent also, but I have a 30 foot travel trailer and a cabin in the woods up north, so I can't see me using the trailer a whole lot for camping.....although I've made more irresponsible purchases before!!!! :)

if you had a cherokee you wouldn't need to drag a trailer full of camping gear through the woods. just kidding, cool trailer,if i had the time i would build one too. although i have kicked around the idea of lifting my pop-up camper to fit 33's

Trust me, I think daily about selling the CJ and buying an XJ. I have owned 3 XJ and loved 'em. If I can get the wife to drive a full size next year to tow the travel trailer, I WILL buy another one!!!

see you don't want to really get rid of it. i think i should just turn my xj into a convertible then i would have what i really want, a topless jeep (the way ilike my woman)
that holds all the gear and fam that goes anywhere i want it too.
