Good grief Toes, have nothing to contribute to the discussion that pointing out errors in semantics? OK, yes, you are correct, I should have said "comparing Obama to Hitler" and "comparing the Democrats to the nazis" Does it make a difference in most peoples minds? no.

Act 300 of 1949

257.311 Possession of operator's or chauffeur's license or receipt when operating motor vehicle required; display; identification.
Sec. 311.
The licensee shall have his or her operator's or chauffeur's license, or the receipt described in section 311a, in his or her immediate possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle, and shall display the same upon demand of any police officer, who shall identify himself or herself as such.

Theres also this:

Quote:
436.1705 Power of peace officer or law enforcement officer witnessing violation to stop and detain person; issuance of appearance ticket.

Sec. 705.

A peace officer or law enforcement officer described under section 201 or an inspector of the commission who witnesses a violation of section 701(1) or 703, or a local ordinance corresponding to section 701(1) or 703, may stop and detain a person and obtain satisfactory identification, seize illegally possessed alcoholic liquor, and issue an appearance ticket as prescribed in section 9c of chapter IV of the code of criminal procedure, 1927 PA 175, MCL 764.9c.
http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(fke...%20AND%20peace

Which is probably what was happening in the cases sited above about people being held pending identification in Michigan.

After rereading our original statement, yes, you are correct. If the police stop you, and you cannot or will not identify youself, they can detain you until they figure out who you are.

But they have to have a reason to stop you first. They cannot stop you purely to check your identification.

Although I'm sure Hombre will point out that he could pretty much make up any excuse to pull someone over.

Yes, they still have to have a reason to stop you. There's been a lot of discussion over on MGO over the fact that as citizens, we are not required to carry identification.

It's hard to go 10 feet down a road without breaking some type of law. Any cop worth .02˘ can find a legal reason to make a valid traffic stop.

Look up a few posts at the image I posted. I have never compared Obama to Hitler, though I will admit Obama IS - much like Hitler WAS - quite the motivational speaker to certain people.

I will never pretend to be naive when it comes to bullshit like this.
