Default 242 replacing a 249 ZJ?

just woundering what all i would have to do to switch out that famous 249 in favor of a 242 or the other transfer case i forgot what the other would fit right in>? i wanna have the option of 2wd and still keep my v8 so i need details and opionons

Make sure you buy a 242 with the same length input shaft. There are 3 possible lengths that you could have. Or tear both cases apart and swap shafts from the 249 to the 242.

Its a good, popular swap if you want to retain the option of the full-time 4wd and really not very complicated aside from the different input lengths. You just want to make sure the output shaft of the transmission does not bottom out in the 242's input and at the same time that it also has sufficient engagement and isn't sitting too shallow.

Allpro Automotive in Lansing (Junk90XJ here on GL) has done a number of them.

Be careful, as there are two different pitches to the input gear. I think the change over is around '94, but I'm not 100% sure.

I would swap out the front axleshafts to the u-joint style, however.
