Default CMU's MiniBaja and Supermileage cars

I'm not really proud of either, but though you guys might be interested. The MiniBaja is way too heavy imo (7-800lbs).

Mine was the supermileage, but it took wayy too long and just just a lawnmower engine in a little aluminum chassis. No hybrids or fancy fuel.

if you build a mini baja car that is 7-800 lbs you ahve no chance at winning

brazil (usually wins every year) is around 425 or so

Not news to me. Shouldnt be news to its builders either. I don't see how that 2wd thing with those itty bitty tires is going to traverse 77ft of mudbogging.

nice job on it. What profs did you work with, just Ritter or are others starting to get involved? I was part of the supermileage group when I was at CMU in 2002 and 2003. We had a race ready chassis, but the body group dropped the ball and we ended up not racing. I actually brought the chassis to my house to do the final inspect, teweeking, and install body mounts, then I never got a body to drop on for the race. Good Luck!!!

December 2003 Grad. of CMU.

Thanks - I didn't even know that they went back that far.

Its still just Ritter, and he didn't really help that much...at all. The program needs more professors to get involved and better leadership all around. In about 5 years maybe, both cars should be strong. The Baja team means well and has made significant progress for a first year team. Still can't believe there is $10000 in materials in that thing tho...

wow, you guys got that much?? We had to beg for the $300 to buy our engine. Everything else was scraps laying arround the metals lab or stuff that ritter bought with lab $$. He did not help a ton on ours either, but he is a good resourse. I had to bring my welder from home to the metals lab because none of the spool guns would work on any of the welders up there and the TIG was broke an no one would cough up the $$ to fix it... So next time you see Ben, tell him John that brought his welder up for the super mileage vehicle says "HI!"

Well, the baja car got the money, we made due much like you did, with the exception that B&S now supplies the engine. Will do on the Ben part, tho I prolly wont see him now until competition.

Firewall is that black panel between the engine and cockpit. Safety cage for the engine? Where is this in the rules?

edit: if you mean for the baja car, its not done yet.

yea i was talkin about the baja car. looks great, Good job but i can get over how u're running fulsize coil overs on a mini baja.. we ordered some custom made quad coil overs with like 6.5" of travel and engineer our suspension to allow about 12" of travel rear and 14" frnt
Maybe we'll see ya in wisconson.. stop by and say HI

We are building one in my class but I am having a hard time with the rear suspension area. We have all the front figured out but the hub and axles and crap are screwing us up. We don't have tons of cash to buy stuff...we're looking for car parts and stuff like that to make it work. The rear end of a junk independant suspension quad would be great.

we made our axle, we took the hubs off of the quad that we had, suz lt 230. and then cut the splines off of that axle also, turned them down so they would fit in to our new axle then welded them up. it works.. not the best solution but it works. i could not find anyone to match the bolt pattern on the rear wheels for hubs. if you want indepentand. keep your eyes open for a 4x4 and then you can use the front. but depending on the money you might be able to score one of thoes cheeper maybe not.
