Here's a site i stumbled on that has some good detailed instructions on repairing or splicing synthetic rope.

It's not too difficult.
I've had to do this from time to time, not on winch ropes, but on other load carrying ropes.

4WOR Mag just did a piece on this in the April issue. They did wire and synthetic rope.

I've got a neighbor who made all of our competition water ski ropes which were used for pulling big pyramids. He's now retired & I'm sure he could do it.
