Default Winch question

So my winch is missing one of the metal bars on top,
not the same winch, but similar to the ones on this one

Are these for anything other than looks/ guard for the cable?
The winch is bolted to the mount so those shouldn't keep it from twisting.

my plan is to replace it with allthread or something, just want to make sure they're not like the "super anti-warp 10 factor bars of death" or something

They are to stiffen the assembly. If you think about it, there are two separate assemblies on either side of the drum that are bolted down with just two bolts each.

Just run wire rope and weld it all together.

Wrap it over the top, so you don't cut your hands on the welds.

come on, that's a little overkill ... isn't it? couldn't you just use baling wire.
