Default CAT and no muffler

So doing the exhaust on my YJ.
AMC V8, current plan is to Y-pipe for single exhaust outlet as i have VERY limited room with the 4-linked rear.

I'm looking at stuffing a nice round body universal catalytic converter under there but i want it to be quiet enough that after a day on the trails i can still hear.
The current cobbled cherry bombs are hella loud.

Would the cat alone quiet the exhaust enough?
I dont have room for a cat and muffler, unless i do a supertrapp end on the turndown or something, but thats too pricey for my POS

If you have more than one Cherry Bomb in there, you have room for a convertor and a muffler.

it's currently one on each outlet, sitting next to the T-case and they dump right after the T-case where the Control arm mounts are.

If i had the Y-pipe off of a J-truck i could mock up the install now

Basically i need to fit whatever exhaust components on the passenger side within the length of a T-18 and D300 adapter

You have to run a Cat. It is illegal if you don't

Look at the exhaust pics in CC's $24,000 YJ build thread. He has a YJ with a V8, single exhaust and a 4-liked rear.

I'm running a cat and no muffler, it has a turn down at the axle. I have a 4.0L 5 speed and it is not too loud. I would say it is slightly quieter than a catless flowmaster setup. I wanted to run the cat to cut down on fumes in the cab when running windowless.

Here is a clip where you can here it idleing. It sounds louder in the video than it does in person for some reason.

Ive been muffler-less in the XJ for about a week. Its a little louder than stock, but its totally manageable.

A cat doesn't remove fumes just cleans up a byproduct of gas. You will still get co2 in there that is the one that kills.

omg...

Carbon dioxide is all around is and is generated by every living organism on the planet. We breathe it every day in large quantities. Its carbon monoxide that kills, genius.

Convertors do remove fumes. The fumes are the by-product of the gasoline combustion. They get heated to the point that the vast majority of them reconfigure into water vapor. Catalytic Convertors aren't like blowing your pot smoke into a dryer sheet like you do at home before you post nonsense in the Tech Forums here.

Fail.

A three-way catalytic converter will reduce HC, CO, NOx and create CO2. CO is the big killer dodger.

Cats DO remove the "fumes" - the noxious ones.

And before you try to argue with me, I just want you to know that I have worked in powertrain calibration, specializing in exhaust emissions, for the last 12 years.

wat i said to meant is that the carboncopymonoxide is almost a duplicate of carbon dioxide which is really just 2 carbon monoxides that joined when they were copied.
