Default Off Shore Drilling ?

Where does GL4x4 stand on off shore drilling?

Does that change if they wanted to drill off shore in the Great Lakes?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/o...0,320967.story

Here is a quote from the article above.

"Don't think there's no interest in drilling in the Great Lakes. Michigan draws the greatest interest because it (and parts of other Midwest states) is sitting on top of the Niagaran coral reef, believed to be loaded with oil and natural gas reserves. Just under Lake Erie is a trillion cubic feet of natural gas, waiting to be tapped. "

I am not going to argu a position. Currently Great Lakes drilling is banned by Congress, but Congress can also lift the ban.

I am only asking a question to see how other see the issue.

I don't have a problem with the drilling as long as it is done in a responsible manner.

My problem is with the argument that allowing drilling in these new places like the Great Lakes or along the outer continental shelf off of Florida would produce some sort of huge immediate and sustained reduction in prices of oil or natural gas. From what I have read, specifically regarding drilling off the Florida coast, it would be much more expensive to drill there because the water is so deep compared to other places that drilling already occurs. Once the law gets changed, it would still take the companies years to develop and test the technology that would make drilling there economically feasible.

I don't care if businesses want to drill in the Great Lakes or not. I don't like that Congress has control over it, though.

Part of me is bummed from the environmental aspect. I don't want any accidents, I don't want any wildlife killed, and I don't want us to keep chopping up/polluting the land and waters.

But part of me says, do whatcha' gotta' do.

Personally, I've put over 300 miles on my bicycle in the past 3 weeks. (I went from consuming $90 in gas/week to $5/week.) I hope you guys enjoyed the 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 0000001% of a penny that gas prices have dropped because of the lack of my demand.

Why shouldn't congress have control of it? Who else would? You think anybody should be able to just go out and drill in the Great Lakes?

If the US drills in the GL so can Canada. Canada has different industrial restrictions/laws. It won't happen because the US wouldn't want Canada to be able to do it.

We should be exploring for oil any place we think we might find it, and developing ways to extract it in a safe and economical way. We should also be working to develop new technology for transportation to replace oil.

No solution is perfect, and we aren't going to get their overnight, so lets think about what we can do in the meantime to get ourselves to our goal.
