Failed t-stat?

Can a t-stat go bad if it gets to hot?

After FINALLY getting my cooling issue solved I put back on my trans cooler in front of the radiator to see if it will cool with that back on. Drive around a bit, notice its at 195*, awesome. Than all of a sudden I look at the gauge is at 220*! Flip the fan on (shitty controller doesn't like to work all the time....that is another project that will be fixed tomorrow) and it comes back down to 205*.

Well I take the trans cooler off. Drive it around and the same damn thing happens! Before I put the cooler on I could drive down the road and it would stay at 195 with the fan off. Now I HAVE to run the fan to keep it at 205*.

So would it be possible that the heat of the coolant caused the t-stat to fail on me? Not opening up all the way??

I have no collapsed hoses. I just can't figure out why its doing this now when I put it back to the way i had it?

could be the T-stat but most new one I thought where set up to fail in the open postion. Easy way to find out pull the T-stat out and see what happens. Also make sure you don't have any air traped in the system. Any air traped in the cooling system can make it do some really strange things. Also make sure your radiator cap is good.

On my old sonoma, the t-stat actually bent a little from over the years, and it wasn't opening all the way. But i assume your thermostat doesn't have 100k miles on it, so i doubt it would deform.

Just go buy a new one and see if it fixes it?

The thing is, I didn't touch anything other than put the trans cooler on, than take it back off because it ran hot.... thought it runs hot without it even.

I had it running for weeks without any issues untill today. The cap is good as when it got around 230* I could see the coolant being diverted to the overflow bottle. Could that cause air to get into the system if the hose in the bottle wasn't submerged in coolant??

You should check and see who else has been using your account to post all these threads about cooling problems over the past couple weeks, then.
