Default door to door dog license checks. wtf.

They started doing this last year where I live, which is lenawee county. People were pissed. They've been doing it on and off since then. They claimed it was a big problem, all these unlicensed dogs. They also said later that it's a great revenue generator. This is what really pissed everybody off.

Today they hit my neighborhood. It's mostly fag dogs around here, definitely not what they are looking for. I wasn't home, but a neighbor called my wife. Since it pisses her off too, she didn't answer the door. Fine with me. My dogs are licensed anyway.

It's a misdemeanor ticket, along with a $200ish fine. An actual crime.

What pisses me off is the fact that they are doing sweeps to ticket people. If everybody was doing meth, I could see it. We're talking about people not paying the county $20 for a dog license.

What's next? Will they show up with a check list and go through your home? Check my attic for Jews?

It's bullshit. Way to be intrusive.

What pisses me off is that you don't need a fucking license for a rat, cat, horse, cow, pig, hamster, elephant, etc... Why the hell do they need to know how many dogs we have?

One of the county retards suggested a "cat license" at a meeting. It made the paper and people shit bricks about that. They then backtracked to say it was never said, probably due to feeling like a complete fucking jackass for even suggesting it.

They claim it's becoming a breed-specific problem, due to every piece of shit out there feeling the need to have a pit bull, etc. In that case, do what you do best-profile people and go after them.

The problem is concentrated in one area, so they go across the whole county just to collect the cash. If they write 5 tickets a day, that's a chunk of change over time.

What about the 22 year old kid on probation for a drunk driving? Didnt realize his dog needs a license, so he gets a week in jail.

Can they really even do that, isn't that almost like an illegal search? Don't they have to have probable cause? What's the difference between that and coming to your door to see if you have an illegal gun or if the car in your garage has up to date registration.

They already did that on our side of the pond. Our 2 dogs and 2 cats cost us $90.00 a year for reg.

It's bullshit.

Very much so. I go to the vet and get my dog a rabies shot, and he get's a nice tag to put on his collar that says he's covered.

Then the county wants you to prove to them that your dog got a shot, to give you another tag that you have to pay for.

when the shit is done, the dog looks like fucking Mr. T.

It's a bullshit tax on owning a pet. Our property taxes are outrageous already. Then the bastards want me to pay to own a pet. I do it, but it still pisses me off.

They can't force a search without a warrant, but if you willingly go along with it, they can write you up without one. If they knock on my door, they better plan on leaving by the shortest distance possible.

If a random search for dog licenses rolled into my neighborhood, you can bet that I would tell them to come back with a warrant or to get off my property. That is ridiculous. Maybe somebody should send them a copy of the fourth amendment

They came around here in Waterford, requesting to see the dog and cat license. Hubby told them the exact thing the CC said. They left...

Nice names!

I also would tell them to check the 4th, and tell them to come back with a warrant.

How about the Pit bull exterminations that they've done in some cities. Door to door confiscation of dogs. They went straight to the needle. Makes me sick.

Better hope that your doggie doesn't yap (he's probably young enough to be exempt from licensing still?)

Once the "officer" notes the existence of the Dog they can legally begin proceeding down the path of ticketing...

I know a lot of people yap about Cat licensing, Horses, Rats, etc. - the greater point, and liability insurance agents can attest to this, is that Dogs are involved in more personal injury/attacks than any other domesticated pet combined. While a large part of it these days is revenue generation, the latter fact, combined with a requirement for shots to be up to date were originally a public safety/health issue for folks to avoid having to get rabies shots after getting nipped trying to deliver the mail, milk, bread, porn or girl scout cookies...

So you're telling me a dog that barks gives a cop the right to walk into my backyard?

I don't think so.

More than likely he will attempt to view the backyard from a neighboring parcel, or other means. Once the dog is in "plain view" it gives enough probable cause (if this were a criminal complaint).

And while the penalty for noncompliance can be as high as an actual misdemeanor, it is still typically a civil offense, not a criminal one. Meaning they can ticket you, and it's up to you to fight it.

They don't need to get all rambunctious/formal - which is why I quoted the word "officer" - as often it's not a police officer but instead an ordinance officer that signs off on the ticket.

Out of curiosity, where is your water meter installed at?

It'd be trivial for the ordinance officer to return and "shadow" the meter reader under the guise of cross-training, along with a building inspector and happen to notice several non-compliant things during the course of duty...

Genesee County sends someone into our neighborhood in Grand Blanc every summer.

They want proof of Rabbi's AND see your valid dog license. If you don't have either you can buy the license, but if you need Rabbi's shot proof. He issues a Warning Ticket and if you don't show proof at the Animal Control by the time he comes back in a week - TICKET! I got one...it said "Harboring a fugitive or unlicensed animal"

You're lucky they didn't charge you with terrorism offense.
