Thumbs up Toyota engine transplant

I want to take the 2f straight 6 out of my 82' FJ40. I am planning to install a chevy small block. Any advice on the year of the block to use? I was wondering if I should slay away from the newer small blocks with the 2 piece rear mains? I was looking at adapting my toyota 4spd to the chevy small block with a new bell housing from Spector Off Road. Any input is good input. Better ideas? Cheaper?

More info than you ever cared to know

http://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series...tml#post875222

Mud is the best site hands down on your 40. BTW Welcome. Your around the corner from me if you need anything.

My opinion, I would keep the 2F. Swapping in a a 350 will actually take off some of the value. 82 was one of the last years 40s came into this country. so its more rare if that makes sense.

If there is nothing wrong with the 2F dont mess with it. if its a carb issue. Send it to Jim C in Lancaster OH. he is the guru of all things cruiser. Helped me out a ton when I lived there.

Thanks for the info. I take it you have a fj? There is lots of good info a the Mud site. No issues with the 2f motor. Just looking for more power to spin the tires through the mud and a little better overall drivability. It is really easy to get parts for sbc engines. The cruiser has been molested a bit. I am tring to fine tune it and make things better. It has a weber carburator on it now.

Yes, I have a 40, have gone through about 5 of them to piece this one together over the last 6 years or so.

FWIW a properly tuned 2F will spin 35s. :)

since you have a later 40, you have the 3.73 gears IIRC. easiest way to get lower would be to find a set of used 4.11s from an earlier cruiser and swap them in. By swapping in I mean just by a pair of used thirds, The whole third drops out. Can ship them in a 5 gallon bucket. They are basically plug and play.

There is a lot of discussion on aftermarket carbs. many others have said and I would agree that the stock carb is the best. you can find them used on Mud and elsewhere for around 100 bucks or so. Complete. Then send it off to Jim in ohio or Mark in CA.
Its another few hundred bucks but well worth it. Jim C did mine and it was the best mod I have ever done. Well that he ever did. Also tweaked it a bit so it runs better.

You could also desmog the engine depending on whats already in there and either molested or not.

yep, gut all the bs off of it.My 78' liked being desmoged a bunch.New head and it was happy. My 80' fj40( canada spec,= no smog bs) would light up 35's if I could fit em.Well, if it was locked I guess.Thats the street queen one.I was going to just do a small block swap in my project, but ended up doing a 350/sm465/np203/splitcase.For the cost it's not bad.You save the $ from a adapter bellhousing and get the 203 to splitcase adapter.Kinda a pain I hear to find the 465/203 stock.Only made for like 4 years.Found one here and thats why it went this far.Even already had the adapter bellhousing in hand. This thing started out as a simple SOA.

Default my fj40 conversion ti chevy power

I love my fj40 with chevy powered (383 tpi corvette motor with turbo 350 attached to 205 transfer case) I burn 38 boggers on pavement with lockers front and back. If you have any questions, just e-mail me. My project took about 1-2 years off and on when I had the money. See pics below. With both 35 and 38 boggers. Toby

You guys are killing me. I really wish I hadn't sold the 78....

Rhino... let me know if you want to get rid of that 203/split case adapter.... I'd be willing to swap you from my 84 running gear... if you decide to go back to stock..

ElfJ40, your's is looking real good. Any more plans, or is it where you want it now?

DH, I've been watching your for sale thread, definitely a bad ass rig.

And welcome FJ40powers. Seams we're starting to get some cruisers on line. good to see.

Well is where I want it right now. I think with the 2F even if I get stupid on the gas I wont break too much stuff.

Wish list includes F & R Lockers. Skid plates for the underbelly, a real exhaust system.

and some more time to drive it. Seriously I have put on about 40 miles since it was "done". and that was 3 years ago.
The photos are from about 5 years ago. Mid way through the build. I transpanted the running gear at this point.
and got the frame and body from NC. for a hundred bucks. yes, a hundred bucks.
