Default 4L60E tranny

Iv got a 2002 chevy 1500 4.8 vortek 4x4 with 147,xxx miles on it and it is starting to slip a bit around 1500 rpms and seems to be sliiping in and out of 3 and drive. i was told it was the 3rd and 4th clutchs going out in it, i was also told though that chevy had fixed there tranny problems but i guess not, anyone herd of this being a common problem or is it just bad fluid inside letting it slip. a master rebuild kit is $200 and i am thinking about just rebuilding it. it is a DD and i havent towed with it yet, but it was previusly owned by an excavating company. So anyone with ideas, thoughts or imputs as to what i might try rather then rebuilding it would be appreciated.
thanks drew

147,000 miles. Yes, the 3-4 clutch is most likely burned. Be sure to replace the 2-3 check ball when your rebuild it.
