Question Chevy 305/350 in YJ

I know about its been done a billion times and I am thinking of putting a 305 or 350 in my 85 YJ sahara. Anyone have good links or reads on how to do so. Cant admagine it being that difficult. About how cheap can I get it done for, excluding motor? Any tips and help would be apreciated.

When you say "get it done for" do you mean what's a shop going to charge you, or what's it going to cost you to do it personally? Either way all depends on how much you want to spend. New axles, trans t-case, or adapters and stock axles?

Figuring that you have a functional motor, and assuming that you are talking solely about the engine swap, I would budget another $1500-$2000. I am also assuming you have a decent t350 or t400 trans that works with the motor. You need;
trans adaptor
motor mounts
radiator and/or modifications to existing
dual exhaust
depending on carb/injection you need fuel pump/ regulator
trans shifter
trans cooler
modifications to existing or new driveshafts
all associated bolts/hoses/electrical
If you're going carb and anything other than an existing quadrajet, you need a carb. I've tried a variety and for my money, don't waste your time with anything other than a Holley truck avenger.

engine mounts, $159
radiator, $200
custom x-member... $150-250? (unless you can weld / fab yourself)
driveshafts shortened / lengthened, $75/ea = $150
T350 to NP-231 adapter, $500
or
700R4/NP231C from a blazer, $400
Lokar shifter, $250
Lokar kickdown cable,, $75
(this stuff is the sh!t)
new water pump, mech. fuel pump, hoses, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, t-stat, misc. gaskets (carb, exhaust, etc...), misc. bolts, nuts, hardware, $500-$750
exhaust work, $250+

take that, add in your engine, and any other major stuff you need.

add in another $500 for misc. stuff, and another $200 in gas for trips to the hardware store.

then, it's a shame to put a bunk motor in, so figure another $100-$150 to clean it up, change the intake gaskets, oilpan gasket, rear main, clean it, degrease it, and paint it. it's easier to fix OUT than in, even if you "think" it'll be ok.

More then I thought...... What is the cheapest most reasonable "make sense" motor to put in then. I got a nice solid jeep with a bunk 4.0. Its got a loud knock in it. Should I just rebuild it......... I dont want to spend a fortune getting a side/fun car running. This isnt going to be a mud monster, just something I can take up north and play around with thats reliable..... makin me think to rebuild the ol 4.0L is the way to go.

I would Rebuild yours or buy another 4.0 to put in it.

the "easiest" and "most economical" will still be the AMC V8. no trans adapter needed.

buy $200 motor mounts and a 3-core radiator for $200. no driveshaft mods, cross-member fab, etc... that saves a TON of time, labor, and $$$ $$$ $$$

all the other stuff still applies, but if you get a good motor, you can eliminate some of the headaches (with ANY engine that's not complete) of trying to get all the nuts/bolts and accessories.

can probably do it for 1/4 to 1/3 of doing a chevy swap.

i think when i did it in a buddy's yj, i used 4cyl radiator hoses.

I did my engine swap for just over 2k including buying a reman AC delco crate motor. All work was done by my dad, me, and a few friends that wanted to turn a wrench.

I used a junkyard 700R4 from a known driving rig mated to a 231C, and bought new waterpump, alternator, carb, water pump, conversion radiator etc... Not much I would change either, I have been pretty happy with my setup.

Will the AMC V8 mate right to an AX-15? I am assuming he meant 95 YJ sahara since there were no YJ's in 1985

i kind of assumed the same thing.

but, yes, an AMC V8 will bolt directly to an AX-15. A stock 360 would be pushing it, but a 304 should live fine in front of it.
