Headed to Key West in Feb with my wife of 22 years and my soon to be 21 Airman. Anyone know of any good fishing charters or any must do/see attractions? Of coarse we will be stopping at every beach bar from Key Biscayne to Key West. Any must go to beaches?
February has "fantasy fest" the LGBT community makes a strong showing. Father in law found that out several years ago.
Heads up.
Get your picture by the bouy stating 90 miles from Cuba. The most southern point of the USA [emoji12]
Dream catchers. have to think of the captains name they have a few but our guy was awesome!
Tarpon were in when we went and we caught some monsters. And shark fishing in the flats when the tide went out was insane!!!
Do you have a place to stay in Key West? I would highly recommend staying close to or on Duval. Find a place that also has parking. We stayed here: http://www.duvalgardens.com/ had a nice room that walked out to a small (very small) inground pool. Continental style breakfast on the porch. I like the smaller B&B's as opposed to the chain hotels/motels.
Plan on doing a bunch of walking as street parking sucks. Wear comfortable shoes. Beaches? Didn't do any. But there is a large public beach. A cool place to chill by the water is the southernmost hotel. When we were there, you could pay a small fee for the tour, and have use of the pool/beach/cash bar for the day. Also, take a couple of the day trips out of the marina/port.
A&B Lobster house for your 'special dinner'. Best oysters Rockefeller I've ever had.
Plan on doing the Duval Crawl every night, following the party down at Mallory Square. Lots of watering holes to check out.
I was there a little over a year ago, rent bikes and go everywhere.
I didn't like duval street, too generic drunk touristy, the state park was cool and worth the visit. I found its better to hunt out places off the beaten path for food. Food quality was the same but half the price.
I did one of the hippie kayak Eco tours in the mangroves, it was pretty cool
Sorry I can't help. They guy I know owned a charter on Hawaii, which he sold. He says when he fishes Florida he goes out of Islamorada. If you want to fish there (or Hawaii :d he has suggestions.
Southern most resort, pricey, but nice place, fishing, look at stock island charters, not as pricey as key west harbor, charters,,pure spearit is a Google one(depends on where you want to fish.the dry tortogas is a great tour, and a good fishing spot. smathers beach a must. If you have a car,go north to no name key and hit no name pub,and pet the key deer.
We went last year and I think we are going again this year.
We did the Dry Tortugas tour and it was pretty cool. https://www.drytortugas.com/
We were down there for a week where places like Miami were having near freezing nights so the whole vacation was a bit cool. But luckily the two days we spent in Key West were beautiful.
It must have been the time of year that we went because when we were there bar hopping we felt like the kids. Everyone else was my parent's age...or older. :sonicjay:
If you see a street banner that says drag races on such and such day, don't be mislead, you won't see any cars... Everything else posted are good suggestions, the Dry Tortugas boat trip is cool and Fort Jefferson is really cool to check out. It is the one of the largest, if not the largest masonry structures in the Americas.
There is a little hole-in-the-wall BBQ place called Wing Masters. Some of the best food I have ever had in the Keys....
Wing Masters
934 Truman Ave, Key West, FL 33040
We were there between Christmas and New-years and it's crazy busy at that time. I was sick of the crowds over on Duval, so I decided to take a walk through some of the not so busy areas. I stopped at a little laundromat to use the restroom and struck up a conversation with a few locals that were doing laundry there. I asked where they would recommended grabbing a bite to eat. Wing Masters was their recommendation.
It was fantastic.
One more note, Key West is my least-favorite Key. I Love the Marathon area. One of the coolest things I did down there was kayaking through the mangroves on boot key at low tide. Sharks, jellyfish, stingray, fish of all kinds, we even had a small family of manatee that surfaced right around us.
Don't fall for the all day excursions that have everything in one like jet skiing, snorkeling, water park on the water. If you want to do any of those excursions do them separate from each other. We did one with all of them together and it's usually a large group witch doesn't allow for much time on each activity. Look for the hole in the wall excursions. We found a snorkeling place off the main highway, way better then the over priced excursion. Actually got a chance to see 4-5 foot shark about 50 ft away while we were in the water [emoji16]
Do the "Duval Crawl" in the evening, stopping in at the bars that catch your attention. All the ones listed are good. The music changes from night to night, so be flexible. In the morning, walk to the Southernmost (south end of Duval) for a Mimosa. The Six-Toed Cat, next to Hemmingway's House, has a nice breakfast. If your wife likes yoga, there is a nice studio just off Duval, that my wife likes. Remember that everything there is Key West/Island Time. If you are in a hurry, you need to drink more, slow down, and enjoy. Leave the chickens alone (they are locals, you're not). WHen you have that Mimosa at the Southernmost, you'll thank me for the suggestion, as will your wife.
I second Dry Tortugas. Been there many times and this past trip we were looking for something different. We rented a 32' offshore boat from Hurricane Hole and headed directly 6 miles south out to sea to the Little ***** reef and snorkeled the reefs alone. It was truly a once in a lifetime trip to be able to be the only ones out on a reef with all of the aquatic life. Definitely something you will never forget.
ive used fishmonster several times. he on facebook to. but i will be down there for a month last week of feb to middle end of march
