Cody J. Mong, 19, Oakland, died in an off-road vehicle accident Thursday in the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Oceana County’s Golden Township.
The incident occurred at 5:20 p.m. Thursday .

The Oceana County sheriff’s deputies and Silver Lake Park rangers were dispatched to a serious injury accident on the Silver Lake State Park Dunes ORV area.

When they arrived they found that Cody J. Mong had been thrown from the quad he was operating and a second quad had jumped and landed on him. Cody suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second quad was flown to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids for non- life-threatening injuries. The incident is still under investigation by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

Departments involved were the Oceana Co. Sheriff’s Office, Michigan DNR and State Park rangers, Oceana EMS, Oceana Sheriff’s Victim Services Unit, and Aeromed.

On the 4th and 5th, you are correct. That Saturday was extremely busy, the beach was 3 deep at the boundry line, plus a double row in the middle on the driving lanes, test hill had people sitting on top and bottom almost across teh whole thing, making it slow moving to do full run thru's.

I think the off holiday weekends are not quiet as bad though, people are still going, but many have to go less, so they pick the holidays, plus some other random weekends.

I've seen wild jumps both with and without spotters. Many of the long travel buggies like to show off at times when they shouldn't but this incident has nothing to do with that.

A couple kids were out having fun and a mistake was made. It's sad, but nothing more than an accident.
