As more information is being released on these drivers who had "sudden acceleration", it is starting to paint a picture of the drivers. An abnormally high amount of these people had diabetes, a MUCH higher % of sticky pedals happened with old people then the average age of toyota owners, and people are now starting to investigate the younger people who had issues, and they're immediately being shown to be a huge fraud.
Check this guy out. Jalopnik found some GREAT information on his insurance fraud past, plus he was 6 months behind on his payment, and somehow his gas pedal STUCK!! OMG OMG OMG OMG!
I'm not saying my theory is proper, but I'm wondering if this will just end up being driver error, insurance con artist, and the like as opposed to a real problem with the cars.
I really don't see why this happening to anyone is worthy of making the news. He claims his pedal stuck, he drove down the highway at a whopping 90 miles an hour for a while, and then he stopped. Woopty-fucking-doo.
I'd say he's getting just what he wanted.... a lot of attention from a bullshit story.
It's just like all the women that came forward for Tiger and all those molested that came forward for all the priests. Were alot legit? Sure, but there were and always will be those dipshits that try to take advantage of the situation or be in the lime light for 5 seconds. Whether it's positive or negative attention.
I find it interesting that 2 Prius owners had a problem a day apart. As much as I'd like to see Toyoda fail, I'm sure there's some scum bags out there running a scam.
i am a lifelong diabetic and fail to see how that is going to cause uncontrolled accelleration. white outs from hypoglycemia, sure. passing out from hyperglycemia, sure. foot pressing down on the gas, nope.
With a tip from a commenter at TTAC, we discovered Sikes owned and operated a web site called AdultSwingLife.com. Interesting. There's also a report from KTLX with a neighbor stating he may have been involved in the porn industry.
When it all comes out you will find that a very rare set of circumstances causes a computer program failure that causes the acceleration.
The radio turned up so with the hvac on a certain setting, battery / charging system at a certain level, rear window defogger on, etc.
The combination will be obscure and difficult to pin down. That is the reason they have not identified the "true problem" and implemented a fix. The fixes in place a shots in the dark to get something in place to save face.
Is it that hard to turn off the ignition if the throttle sticks open.
Ive had that happen with 2 different carb'd jeeps in the past.
A bear, to steer & stop without the motor running but do-a-ble.

Out of curiosity I borrowed my moms Toyota today. At 60 with the gas to the floor, I hit the brakes and stopped surprisingly well, once it got into first gear it went just a bit further then stopped. You could also shut it off in either drive or neutral by holding down the On/Off button for 3 seconds, you lose power steering but it DOES NOT lock up. If you were going slow enough, you only had to hit the button quickly and it would shut off, even if in drive.
You can even start it back up in drive even without the foot on the brake, which I thought was kinda weird. Also, there was no way I could reach the gas pedal with my hand while in the seat, let alone at 90 MPH.
