by some sort of hornets or wasps, that live in the ground (maybe rotted wood). So much for landscaping. I was about done for the day so I started cutting the grass over an area that I just pulled a bunch of old timbers out of the ground. I had 3 bites before I knew what the hell happened... My ankle now has 3 bullseye marks on it... oh well, off to work.
we call those yellow jackets around here. they build paper nests in burrows under ground if they can't find an easier location to build.
for the real fun, tangle with a bald faced hornet... I've seen 'em pluck yellow jackets, and run of the mill paper wasps out of the air and bite their heads off...
they sound like hummingbirds when they dive at ya too...
There are many types of wasps that live in the ground. We have Cicada killers in our yard, but they mostly hunt bugs and leave me alone. They will zoom me when mowing the yard, but am yet to get bit.
Cicada killer nests are easy to see as they kick out a dirt pile as they burrow into the ground.
Mud daubers are also in michigan and build their nest in the ground and around wood.

Ran into a yellowjacket nest at the base of a shrub when I was leaf blowing a few years ago...I dunno, prolly got 50 stings. They chased me all around the house. I had to strip almost nekkid in the front yard. The wife was yelling to "keep yer clothes on, there are kids out there" :sonicjay:
I was stipped to my boxers and t-shirt and then got inside the house. They stayed on my sweatshirt and pants and socks and shoes for hours attacking them in the front yard.
Last summer we left for the weekend and came home like 4 days later and there was a bald face hornet nest that went up on the back of our house. Shit can they build fast! It was about as big as your head. And those things have got to be the biggest hornet on the planet...shit they sound like a chopper when they fly by.
This thread reminds me of a show I saw several years ago where they tested whether wasps were more attracted to light-colored dogs or black dogs. They concluded that bees and wasps are more attracted to black for some reason. Anyway, wear white next time and see if you get fewer stings.

I've noticed a Blue Jay around my house lately. Figure its scouting for a nest.
I was sitting at the PC this afternoon and looked up out the doorwall to see this same Blue Jay buzzing aound my porch area intermittently, slamming into the house (could hear it) from time to time. I also noticed that here were a good 10 yellow fockers in the air on the porch. He was attacking/eating them and ripping the nests down from the eves. :thumb:
That sux!!! Atleast you were not wearing black knee high's and sandles with your short's did you at least have a "V" neck white t-shirt on? :tonka: :tonka: :tonka:
i hope he was running around the yard like this too.. ----> :nana:
