I know there's a few bike enthusiastic on here, so I'll give it a shot. I'm looking for a peddly bike. I prefer a mountain bike style, but it will be used mainly for road riding. I'm 5'10. What size do I need? I would like to keep the cost under 200. It will be used for general exercise, riding to work ect.
What are things to look for. Are the ones from meijer/walmart worth it?
It'll strengthen your core a fair amount. Stems are available in all kinds of lengths and angles to make it comfy. Specialized makes one that uses a shim to change the angle 6 different ways so you can make it way up or way down and anywhere in between.
Look for a used Specialized maybe a Hardrock and slap some road tires on it. You should be able to pick one of these up between $200-300 and some decent road tires will run you another $40. This is a good way to put some miles on the road and in a few minutes you can swap the tires out, throw the bike in the back of the 4x4 and go trail riding.
I've seen good deals on Gt's and Dyno's from the 90's on Craigslist. They are not old enough to interest the collectors, but still decent bikes for $100-$150.
both my little one's are racing Haro's on the BMX track, Haro still makes good bikes. JohnnyJ kids don't have the boner's for bikes like we did when we were kids, the only kids that even know if they have a cool bike are the ones I see at the bmx tracks on the weekends, or at the dirt jump's, or at the Downhill races I go to....EVERY neighborhood kid these days just rides walmart shit....
But, if you still want to spend the money on an expensive bmx bike for your boy check out something like dan's comp. They have a lot of quality brands.
I think I'm kinda in the the sub $200 mindset. I'd like to try it out. If its something I get into I don't mind spending good money on a better one in the future.
That was my first "mountain bike" Exact same color scheme and everything. Paid $600 or $500 OTD, and rode that bike HARD for a number of years. I sold it last fall for $50. I regret it to this day, I wish I would have upgraded the fork and turned it into a single speed.
Something like that is a great bike for what most of you guys sound like you want to do.
If you're looking for fitness without compromising your (relative) comfort, you need to be as upright as possible. I forgot about your back surgeries - the riding position of much anything else is going to give your back fits.
Older Dawes are made in England and are pretty good bikes. The newer ones have no affiliation to the previous company. If memory serves, the new ones are Chinese junk. But even crappy bike companies put out a good bike now and then. You would need to look at the components and the frame material.
Well, day 6 I think of owning this bike. I've only ridden 3 days, and did 7.15 miles, and 8.35 miles and 2.23 miles (one way to work, here till 2am) Legs are starting to feel better. Over all, very happy with this bike. Have added a mileage/speed computer, front and rear LED lights.
if you have an iphone or droid download strava, free app, tracks your rides, let' you follow others, pretty cool app and has kept me wanting to ride more to add more rides to my profile.
I wonder if its built with the same attention to detail and quality as the Jeep product I drive that spits fuel at me every time I gas up... :sonicjay:
I bought bike #1 last night. Now I just need to find another one and we can form our own little biker gang...
