I believe the quarter panals were reinforced on those trucks with exterior spare tire carrier. I know the fullsize bronco's they did. i'm sure you could remove tail light and mock up a good reinforcing plate for the back.
I helped a guy so this about 4 years ago on an 85 ranger. We had to build a small brace to inside the bed side and we prob overkilled by using 2x2 box tubing and spme 1/4" plate allowing it to mount to the side of the frame where the old spare tire carrier use to mount but it worked out great. ill see if i can find some old pics of the build.
