Default Convert utility trailer to car hauler

This may be a stupid idea, maybe not lol.

I own this trailer, was fine while I had my RZR,

But, I need it to be wide enough to haul vehicles, about 3" wider per side. The deck is junk, but it has a 3,000lb winch on it and 3500 lb axles.

The way I understand it, the top rail is part of the structure of the trailer, I can't just lop it off.

But what if I cut it off and dropped it down, so that it was the edge of the trailer now? Or, used a piece of 1x3 steel on each side to both widen and brace it?

Any thoughts?

I wonder if you'll have as much into it after upgrades as you would selling and buying another.

But...Could you build c channel rails and tie in?

I considered that, but IDK what a trailer with a crap deck is worth lol. And I don't want to re-deck it to sell it.

If you spend a few minutes on Craigslist you will realize it's worth more than it's worth lol

I have one like this, only a flat bed, I just finished building. All new paont, lights, decking, etc. 2 3500 lb axles both with brakes and ramps I'd let go for 1,300. It measures 75" wide. People want stupid amounts for trailers nowadays. Let me know ifinterested

I have a utility trailer just as the one you have in the picture....and I already use it as a car hauler lol

It was beefed up with though, frame was plated over, new deck, the end had a c-channel welded on to hold a set of ramps. 3 ft ramps were built and a slide holder was welded in the end so the ramps actually slide under the trailer sideways and pin in place. Ramps have a reverse c channel lip that mates to the c-channel on the trailer, works perfect for loading and unloading. Much the same concept as a snowmobile trailer with a ramp.

I've used it to haul an extended cab ranger, half dozen cars, a friend has used it haul jeeps, and up to a fullsize chevy truck.

I just did one for a customer. We cut off the rails and put removable fenders on it. Works great. As long as its got 3500lb axles and the framework is solid then your good. Ive also made these trailers wider by adding some sqaure tube on the sides. Really only an issue with fullsize axles with big ass tires. It will still fit without it but its got alot of overhang.

I was in the exact same position. Sold my 16 foot utility for 1700 and found a beefy flatbed for 1000 (got a smokin deal, but they come up and go quick for 1500). Just throw yours on for 2k and see what you can get. Its lawn season so you might sell it quick and for more than youd think.

I put it up for sale last night and have about 70 offers on it lol. Most of those offers are for 500 bucks, but still, it's pretty encouraging lol.

This one is 64" between the rails, it doesn't fit my C10 or my F150, which is a real bummer lol, since it's the only reason I bought it.

My recent experience is a 10 year old trailer with bald tires is worth $200 less than a brand new one...
