This weekend at silver lake I managed to collapse a lifter in my Mopar 360. Comp cams less then few thousand miles. What can cause this? 5500 rpm all day? Lol
Did you use an oil that has extra zink to protect the cam?
If you changed the oil after the cam install, you have to use an additive unless you are using the correct oil for a flat tappet cam.
GF4 oils have very little zink and phosphorus.(sp)
assuming you replaced the lifters when you did the cam?
Too many rRRRRs sounds like. I've done it in an old pontiac once, rocker arm just kinda layed there, shot fire out the quadrajet on every revolution... :teehee:
I did the proper break in and additives and all that.
I just think running at those RPMs finally caught up to it and collapsed it. I have not drained the oil yet to see if there is metal in there... so it is very possible its a bad lifter / cam lobe.
I did some reading and people are saying those lifters do not like prolong high RPM.... So do I limit my RPM down to 5k or do a solid lifter cam?
If it was broken in properly and has the correct lubricant there is no rpm limit for the cam and lifters, only for the valve springs. Solid lifters would give you no advantage if the heads are stock castings.
Does a Hemi run solid lifters? Not the new ones and they run good #'s.
Seems like a lot of people with the comp cams have had lifter issues. I remember hearing they had a recall on their lifters.... ? Either way I'll pull it apart and see if the cam is gone. I'll keep ya all posted!
comp cams lifters have been known to have issues. my neighbors 427 BBC had brand new CC lifters in them and he just had 4 of them come totally apart in the motor. the cheap circlip that holds the body together broke. the engine only had maybe 5 hours of run time at best.
When I bought my stuff from Comp the guy told me it was imperative to run the ZDDP additive and/or an oil with extremely high zinc levels. FWIW I've been running Amsoil Signature Series since break in (12k miles ago) with 0 issues.
The zddp additive is the only thing that will keep the cam and lifters happy until they have MANY hours on them. From what I have read, the zddp impregnates the metal making for a surface that will withstand the extremely high loads the cam nose sees during operation.
Most cam manufacturer's also offer Nitriding (an additional hardening process) of cams at an additional charge to insure better break in results. Cam and lifter break in is a longer process than most people understand.
Ok so I pulled it apart today. I found that the lifter has a hole in the bottom and is no longer flat. It is concaved and matches the contour of the cam lobe.
It seems to me that car craft had a write up in the last month or so about cam and lifter break in procedures and oil comparisions. Maybe worth reading up on. Oil has changed alot for the worse in the last few years. I'll check the "library" and see what month it was in
I do run wallyworld oil. But I change it after every hard run. Maybe that has something to do with it.... I guess there can be a lot of variables. I'll see if i can find that article online though, thanks!
That'll happen... I doubt it has anything to do with the oil you're running Shouldnt really matter after the cam is broken in.. Its all about the break in period with the right stuff
Do they make any kind of roller cam retrofits deals?
who knows what is to blame. I don't think running wally world oil helps any as i've heard it degrades quick. I'll start throwing in zinc additives as I do not want to repeat this.
They do, however its not worth the cost. I bought a howards cam and lifters which will arrive in the morning
Change your oil several times when you get it running all that metal is somewhere in your engine. Hopefully most is in the filter, but you do not want it tearing up the rods and mains hopefully it hasent allready because it dont take long.
