What's the trick for climbing test hill ? We were there yesterday and our LJ was having trouble ? I was thinking not enough horse power then a stocker looking XJ with small tires walked right up ? Hell the rental jeeps were getting most the way up .
I did make it after removing the spare tire , doors and most items out of the back . We had to make a higher speed run at it more than most.
I remember watching a stock 2wd E350 go right up it. I thought some guy was raging on his lease vehicle before he turned it in but kept seeing same van out there. I've never had a vehicle I couldn't make it to the top in. My buddy's CJ7 with an auto wouldn't do it till he put in a SBC.
He is not a moron, the auto sucked up what little power that 6cyl put out, even with 4.56 gears and lockers it would not do it. Another buddy had similar 86 CJ7 new and I watched him try to climb a small sand hill and could hear the engine rev and the tires wouldn't even spin.
My bad...you are correct.
In fact....I hear that they are considering make V8's mandatory to get in. If I remember, I think they are considering a minimum of 400 horsepower. There will be a dyno at the entrance.
Multiple trips, different drivers tried it. It would not make it. Thats why it has a V8 in it. Rig woked great at the Mounds. I just figured it was one of those j@@p things I keep hearing about.
My wife's bone-stock JKU was my favorite dune ride - 12psi on stock tires and rims, point it in the right direction and mash the gas. My LJ went right up test hill, but I needed 8psi - the YJ needed to go all the way down to 4-6psi to find the happy spot. Every tire and vehicle combination is different.
The easiest question did you have it in low range? I had an old 65 wagoneer and I made it where by buddies with much more power in thier waggys could not make the top, they were trying in high range. Once they went to low range they went right up.
I thought the hill assist was just for the engine brake going down?
regardless, I would not try going out on the sand without airing down.
My JKU is great out there, but it still needs low air pressure.
I agree. I have been there when I could idle the steepest parts and I have been there when I could not crawl any of it. But I have never been there when it can't be conquered with the right tire pressure and a little momentum.
I was up there with a small group a few years ago, friend's brother was there in a CJ and struggling to get up Test Hill, finally crested after about 8 tries.
When he got out we asked what tire pressure he was at cause it didnt' look low enough, he said he was at 10 and swore it wasnt' the tire pressure, he needed a v8 swap bad. The brother and I started letting air out, down to 6 or 8, told him to try again. He was not happy with us, and reluctantly backed down to the bottom. Drove straight up with out an issue, grinning ear to ear, hopped out and was yelling "I'd swear you just swapped a V8 it there"
I've also seen people that were making it "ok" but were beating the shit out of their vehicle to get it to the top. So I try talking them into airing down a bit more so they don't have to be so hard on the vehicle. The ones that do are very thankful, the ones that dont' often leave with broken vehicles being towed by others, just because they refused to go lower.
test hill and sand conditions change weekend to weekend. The recipe for one vehicle isn't always the recipe needed for another. But I digress, let the "I can drive my caddy up that thing blindfolded" talk resume.

So Much Depends On The Moisture In The Sand. In The Morning With The Dew On Before The Sand Gets All Fluffed Up You Come In The Park Take A Left And Go Like Hell Up And Over. At Four In The After Noon On A Hot Day When The Wind Is Blowing All The Stockers Are At The Bottom Or Half Way up.
It took me a few times when my ranger was stock w/ 30.5" tires. I've gone out there with 31" duras and 15psi and had no problems. My ranger now has coil overs, an AAL and the previously mentioned duras.
I use 4hi and third gear. I've also used 4low to make it up. I found the key is wheel spin. Keep on top of the sand and your momentum. Once you loose that, you're gonna have issues.
Ask whiterino.. I air mine up in my ZJ because swamper truxus work great in the sand ,and a V8 with awd was no fun and too easy aired down... I almost got stuck following and he told me to air down... I said I aired up, it was my version of having 2wd and a challenge
I used to take my 2WD S10 out there stock. Never attempted test hill but had plenty of success other places. My Stock Explorer with Yoko's made it up with little struggle.
If @dumperdave can make a Cherokee with a pos 2.9 swap go up test hill you guys should have no problem...
