Default OK, Ford 9" guys, bearing preload

I'm putting new moser axle shafts in my full width F150 9". I bought the axles with the set 20 bearings and seal installed. When put into the axle housing, and using the original drum brake backing plate as a spacer, there is still about 1/8" to the change in diameter where the rectangular retainer plate seats. So, if I tighten down the bolts, it will bow the plate and pull the bearing cone into the cup with no running clearance.

I just got off the phone with Moser and the guy there tells me this is normal and not to worry.

Input???????

I think I'm running set 20s on my rear d60 with moser big bearing ends and moser shafts. and they stick out a little, but I don't think 1/8".

two things that I can think of:

1) do the shafts have too little spline and this is preventing from inserting further?
2) put some gear oil on the bearings and see if they pull in, I know that helped with mine

I do recall it being a bit tight the first attempt, but with a little lube it pulled in.

John, this is based on measuring the depth of the bore and the width of the bearing & spacer. I have talked to Moser and Currie but want to see what others have done.
