Default bluray logic question

I'm looking at bluray players and they're all quite pricey for one, but I keep seeing and hearing that newer players will have more features in the future and not to get this one or that one. However I am hearing a few plugs/recommendations to go with a PS3 for use as a bluray player as its the cheapest with the same features as well as has updateable firmware. Am I wrong here or what? I would like to play Uncharted at least once.

Most current players are at the 1.0 or 1.1 profile, and aren't upgradeable. I don't believe there are profile 2.0 players out there yet, but PS3 is probably going to get an upgrade to 2.0 eventually.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluray#Player_profiles

There's a matrix of the features of each profile.

Personally, I'd wait a bit to buy one, or go with the PS3 if you're desperate.

Not really desperate. With a new tv I'd like one and really would like to play uncharted. 2 birds with 1 stone really. And is Sony sticks with their 10 year product cycle plan it will be a worthwhile investment for a while.

Just so there are no misconceptions - bluray profile 2.0 discs will still play in 1.0/1.1 players. You just don't get to view the 2.0 specific content.

Actually I heard they are just gonna stop producing movies in HD they are all gonna be blue ray from here on out.

The reason people say to go with the ps3 is because it's always hooked to the internet there for all the updates are automatic. As stated all older players will still play the movies you just won't be able to access the newer tech stuff. Some of the newer blue ray players are upgradeable but you have to send it out for the upgrades (kinda makes the ps3 look even better IMO) Either way buy the best one your pocket book allows!

Actually, I heard Toshiba announced that they are not going to produce the hardware anymore. They don't make the movies.

Paramount and Dreamworks are the only 2 studios committed to HD. They have not as yet announced any plans to switch, but without Toshiba doing more R&D or building the hardware it would be a poor business decision on the studios part to remain committed to a dead tech.

Could be even worse if they just ditch the existing production contracts. It would be different if everyone released everyone of their obligations so they could shift their focus to the other hardware, as Toshiba already stated that letting go of the effort will be saving them some ridiculous amount of money in the area of 500 million dollars a year or something?

They say that there will still be hd-dvd drives for computers, so if it came down to it, you could hook your computer to your tv.
For the original question, I would buy a PS3. Games & movies = more better
